Taking the plunge at Giola, a mesmerizing natural pool by the sea, also known as «Aphrodite's Tear», is a unique experience worth having on Thassos.
A lush green island-gem in the Northern Aegean is Thasos, with villages nestled in the embrace of pines, wonderful beaches and little surprises for lovers of exploration. On the island you'll find countless coves and beaches for every taste, as well as more… special places for swims that will stay with you forever.
In the island's southeast, near Astrida and about 40 km. from Limenas, you'll encounter a landscape of wild beauty, perhaps Thasos's most photographed in recent years. We're talking about Giola, a magical natural pool shaped among the rocks. Only a few centimeters separate it from the sea, with its turquoise-green waters (3 meters deep) refreshed by the waves.
According to myth, Thasos's rocky pool was created by Zeus so that Aphrodite could enjoy her bath in it. That's why you'll hear many locals also call it the «Tear of Aphrodite». Another myth claims the pool was Zeus's eye with which he watched his lover.
Visitors to the Giola sunbathe on the broad rocks and fill their Instagram with photos of the wonderful spectacle, while the more daring dive from the natural springboard 8 meters high into the depths. Completing the scene is the small, uninhabited islet Astiriotiko, or Panagia, visible opposite and, according to legends, inhabited by Sirens. Swimming in Giola is a unique experience you shouldn't miss if you like becoming one with nature and are looking for something out of the ordinary.
To reach Giola, coming from Potos head towards Astrida and follow the signs that lead first to the dirt road and then a path. The view of the natural pool from above as you descend the path will make you eager to dive into its exotic waters.
