We’ve handpicked the most underrated Greek islands for holidays in the Aegean and Ionian.
Greece has over 200 inhabited islands – and dozens of them remain «invisible» on the tourist map, still «out of frame». Greece is not only the headlines of travel blogs and viral photos. It is also the scent of jasmine, the people who treat you for no reason, the tucked-away little tavernas you wont find on TripAdvisor.
Who doesnt want undeveloped beaches with hardly any people, a gentle pace, alleys almost empty of tourist hordes? Who doesnt want to discover something new that will allow them to truly unwind and not just pose with an Instagrammable sunset as a backdrop?
We have gathered the most underrated Greek islands for holidays – and they deserve a place on your travel list.
Thasos
Thasos is the northernmost island of the Aegean. It doesnt have hype, it doesnt attract celebrities, its not the classic cosmopolitan island. But it has something far rarer: lush greenery, pine forests that reach the sea, lakes, waterfalls, traditional villages and great cuisine. Giola is Thasoss «natural pool» nestled among the rocks, and some locals call it the «Tear of Aphrodite». It was formed by the seas waves that batter and sculpt the rocks over time. It is an island that combines mountain and sea, trails through olive groves, and the fact that you cant reach it from any Athens port but from Kavala keeps its tourism at more manageable levels. It is definitely for those seeking nature, tranquility and relaxation.
