METAXA LIKNON is not just a vineyard. It is a living experience, inviting you to listen, smell, taste and feel its every facet.
Long before it became a tourist destination, Samos was already famed to the ends of the earth for something deeper and older: its wine. Since antiquity, the island’s slopes have given birth to one of the most fragrant treasures of the Mediterranean, Samos Muscat. The ancient Greeks considered it the «wine of the gods», the Romans shipped it by boat across the Empire, and to this day the island maintains this unique bond with the vine and with wine.
And that is exactly where the past meets the present, because the famed Samos Muscat has become the «heart» of one of the most emblematic Greek spirits: METAXA. The island’s exceptional-quality Muscat is the key ingredient that gives METAXA its distinctive character. So it’s no surprise that Samos was chosen as the place where the soul of METAXA now beats, where LIKNON was «born», a place inspired by nature, light, and the grape itself. A place dedicated not only to production, but also to experience.
As Χουίτη Κωνσταντινίδου, Hospitality and Events Director for the House of Metaxa, told us during our recent visit to METAXA’s «home» on Samos, «liknon is the cradle, but we use the term to symbolize that something big, something important is being born».
The METAXA LIKNON is, one could say, an almost poetic place, dedicated to the essence of the Greek spirit that has conquered the world, to the light of the Aegean and above all to the very soil of Samos. Seen from afar, it looks as if it has «sprung» from the landscape itself, nestled among the island’s historic vineyards, just below the village of Vourliotes, between stone terraces and grapes scented with sunshine. LIKNON is an ode to the philosophy of distillation: patience, care, and authenticity.
The building’s architecture is equally impressive. Fully integrated into the natural environment, almost invisible from afar, built with stone, wood, and local materials, it gives the sense that it has always been there. The K–Studio architecture firm designed it, and it’s no accident that to date it has won ten important architectural awards.
What anyone who visits immediately understands is that the building in no way tries to impress. On the contrary, it invites you to sense it, to feel it. To walk the terraces, to touch the grapes, to listen to the sound of the wind among the vines. And through this contact, to understand the «why» behind the creation of METAXA. At the same time, as Metaxa Master, Κωστής Καλπαξίδης also told us «this particular vineyard has been organically cultivated since 2017 and here methods are applied that are friendly to the environment and to the island’s biodiversity. That was our goal from the very beginning».
The experience at LIKNON, which has now opened to the general public, is multi-layered. It is not a simple tour. It is a journey through time, taste, and the art of distillation. You start from the vineyard, you see the roots of the Muscat that narrate the story of METAXA, you pass the old barrels (those that are there, because you will find most of them in the METAXA cellars in Kifissia, you smell the aromas and, of course, you taste the different expressions of METAXA in a specially designed tasting room.
But what ultimately stays with you is not only the taste or the image. It is the feeling that you have found yourself in an authentic place, one not made to impress, but to tell a true story. A story that starts from the soil of Samos and reaches your glass, in an almost ritual way.
And as the sun sets behind the ridgelines of Mount Ambelos, everything seems to find its rhythm. The light gilds the grapes, the air fills with the aromas of earth and sea, and you sit on a simple stone-built balcony, holding a glass with a refreshing Metaxa Spritz in your hand.
There is nothing flashy. Only authenticity, tranquility, and that rare feeling that you are exactly where you should be. LIKNON is not just a destination. It is an experience that connects you with the past, fills you with flavor and light, and lets you leave a little more «rich». Not only in images, but in emotions as well.
