Daily Mail: 5 underrated Greek islands for peaceful holidays

Secluded beaches, authentic beauty and smaller crowds. These are the Greek islands that, according to the Daily Mail, are ideal for tranquil holidays this summer.

With overtourism being a pressing issue in Greece and throngs of tourists filling islands such as Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu, the Daily Mail recommends five «underrated» Greek islands that, although less known abroad, have nothing to envy from the rest. All offer sun, sand and endless beaches, calm and serenity far from the crowds.

Tilos

One of the lesser-known islands in Greece is Tilos. This small and remote island, located between Kos and Rhodes, remains untouched by mass tourism and preserves its pristine charm. Tilos is very popular with wild campers and travelers seeking peace and quiet on their holidays. Spread across the mountain’s foothills lies the capital of Tilos, Megalo Chorio, with the Medieval Castle at the top, while the busiest settlement is the port of Livadia.

Chios

Chios, the fifth-largest Greek island in the northern Aegean, attracts plenty of tourists yet manages to remain low-key. It retains its pristine beauty and offers wonderful beaches, picturesque villages and standout local products such as the famed Chios mastic. Its calm and authenticity make it an excellent destination for a holiday.

Kythira

With remarkable natural beauty, Kythira is one of the most distinctive islands south of the Peloponnese. Access is not as easy as to other islands near the capital, as it takes many hours by car and ferry and for those living abroad there are no direct flights. However, a visit is worth it, as the island hides many beauties. With sights such as the castle, beaches with turquoise waters, picturesque villages and local gastronomy, Kythira is a destination that stands out and, according to the Daily Mail, is one of the best places for a holiday in Greece.

Amorgos

Amorgos is the favorite Cycladic island for lovers of alternative tourism, nature and tranquility. Amorgos has preserved the traditional architecture of its settlements, along with the authentic way of life of its residents. Among the most beautiful routes is the road between Amorgos’s mountains that connects its villages, while the Bay of Kalotaritissa is, for many, the island’s most beautiful beach.

Samos

Samos, with around 33.000 permanent residents, is better known abroad, but it can boast its tranquility. Beyond the island’s capital, Vathy, there are many undeveloped beaches and quiet spots amid forests and mountains, where life is traditional. Villages such as Manolates, Palaio Karlovasi, Platanos and Spatharei are picturesque and worth a visit, as is Mikri Lakka beach, which is sheltered from the wind and secluded.
