Lafkos: The Pelion village with the oldest café in Greece

One of the hidden gems in the heart of Southern Pelion, Lafkos harbors a tranquil charm.

Lafkos is a village not so well known to most, hidden in Southern Pelion at an elevation of about 300 meters. With a long history, as it is one of the oldest in Pelion, sweeping views of the Pagasetic Gulf, cobbled lanes, mansions and traditional houses, the village’s setting is nostalgic. It is about 50 kilometers from Volos and has nothing to envy of the more famous villages on the mountain of the Centaurs.

The focal point of the village’s daily life is the main square, ringed by towering plane trees. There you’ll see the tavernas and the oldest coffeehouse in Greece, Traditional Kafeneion Forlida. Manolis Forlidas’s coffeehouse has been operating uninterrupted since 1785 and has passed from generation to generation. This is revealed by photographs that bear witness to its history. It has been visited by important men of letters such as Alexandros Papadiamantis, Kostas Varnalis and Giorgos Seferis. There you will drink your Greek coffee with the locals, in a nostalgic atmosphere.
