5 destinations in Greece for October

October in Greece means strolls in the crisp outdoors, mountain walks and culinary experiences in villages and cities.

October is the month when nature changes colors, temperatures become milder and Greece reveals a different, more serene side of itself. This is the ideal period for short escapes, whether you want to relax, walk in nature or savor local flavors in the villages.

From Macedonia to the Peloponnese, the experiences you can have are many and unforgettable. Below you will find five distinct destinations for traveling in Greece in October. Each place offers a different experience, but all share warm hospitality, the wonderful colors of nature, and the chance for rest and renewal.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is always appealing, but in the autumn months it takes on a special charm. The weather is ideal for strolls along the waterfront without the summer heat, and for visiting landmarks such as the White Tower, the Rotunda and the Byzantine churches. In the city center you will also find many museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Do not miss wandering through the neighborhoods of the Upper Town, at the Castles of Thessaloniki with their wonderful view of the Thermaic Gulf.

Food lovers are never disappointed in this city, as the local cuisine stands out for both traditional savory dishes and sweets. Soak up the buzz of the city, sit at meze taverns and ouzeri in Ladadika and in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Agion Apostolon and do not forget to try Panorama triangles and bougatsa. October is a month full of festivals and events in Thessaloniki, as on the 26th the patron saint of the city, Saint Demetrios, is celebrated, on the 28th the national anniversary and on the 30th the liberation of the city.

Southern Pelion

Southern Pelion is a destination that harmoniously combines the beauty of the mountain with the sea. An ideal trip for those who love road trips and want to enjoy relaxation in quaint squares with tsipouro taverns and cafés, walks in nature, hiking on beautiful trails and dips in emerald seas. In traditional villages with stone houses such as Argalasti and Lafkos you will enjoy the tranquility of the squares, in Vizitsa, Agios Georgios Nileias and Pinakates you will admire the traditional architecture, and in Milies you will start your ride on Pelion’s famous little train, Moutzouris, which travels towards Ano Lechonia and back.

This side of Pelion hides many beauties, with the Aegean and the Pagasetic unfolding before the seaside villages of the area. If you are a sea lover, you will not be disappointed, as there are beaches with crystal clear waters even for autumn swims. Sit for coffee and food with views of the endless blue in Milina and Tzasteni. Agia Kyriaki, a fishing village with an Aegean character, is renowned for its fish taverns. From Alogoporos you can take the little boat to reach the islet of Palaio Trikeri, the only inhabited island in the Pagasetic Gulf.

Karditsa - Lake Plastira

The warm and welcoming city of Karditsa is an ideal base for exploring Lake Plastira, one of the most impressive destinations in the country. The summer heat has subsided and strolls around the city are pleasant. Walk through Pausilypo Park and enjoy the falling leaves, visit the Archaeological Museum of Karditsa and sit for tsipouro and meze at the meze taverns of the city and for coffee in the central square

In autumn, the colors around Lake Plastira are enchanting, with red, yellow and green hues that beautify the landscape. You can visit the villages around the lake or in the mountains and choose an activity such as cycling by the lake, canoe-kayak, hiking on the trails or cycling, as well as horseback riding. In the villages you will find cafés with views towards the lake and tavernas with local flavors, while at the dam of the lake (the Tavropos Dam), there are local producers with honey and other products of the area to take with you.

Mountainous Arcadia

Mountainous Arcadia is one of the most popular autumn destinations in Greece. The villages near Mainalo are stone-built and the trails pass through beech and chestnut forests. There, fireplaces and wood stoves are lit early, creating a warm atmosphere ideal for relaxation. Choose one of the picturesque villages as a base and explore the others by car. In Vytina the options for coffee, food and shopping are many, in Stemnitsa and in Karytaina you will find your peace.

For those who love food, the options are many, with local recipes and products that stand out.

Monemvasia

A destination that seems taken from a fairy tale, Monemvasia is the jewel-like castle town of Laconia. One of the most popular castles in Greece that resembles no other, this small town never ceases to surprise visitors. The castle of Monemvasia feels as if time has stopped, built on the rock on a small strip of land and October is the best time to walk it without the summer heat and the crowds.

The birthplace of Yiannis Ritsos, where his house is located, impresses people of all ages. It is worth choosing accommodation within the castle town, so that you have immediate access to both the sights and the shops. The stone buildings, the small shops and the restaurants along the picturesque alleys lie among Byzantine churches and guesthouses. At the top towers the Acropolis of the Upper Town, with views that take your breath away. If you feel like hiking, head towards the Monemvasia Lighthouse, which is at the edge of the rocky islet.
