From the islands to the cities and mountain villages, Greece offers many options for holidays and short getaways in September.
September is the month that blends all the best of summer with a quieter, more authentic atmosphere. For many, it is the finest time for holidays and travel in Greece. Augusts heat gradually subsides, evenings feel a little cooler, while the beaches remain alluring and the waters crystal clear. The first month of autumn is ideal for savoring the countrys beauty at a more relaxed pace, away from the crowds of previous months. From islands that keep the summer breeze alive to seaside towns and traditional villages, these are eight destinations worth adding to your September list.
Spetses
One of the most cosmopolitan destinations near Athens, Spetses is an ideal island for short getaways. In September the pace is more relaxed and the temperature lower. Agia Marina and Agios Mamas beaches are perfect for quick dips, while Zogeria, Xylokeriza, Agia Paraskevi and Agioi Anargyroi boast more striking waters and tamarisks. In the late afternoon, as the sun sets, the loveliest stroll is towards the old harbor with fish tavernas right by the water.
September coincides with the Reenactment of the Battle of Spetses of 1822, a major celebration held every year on the first weekend of September. Armata is the islands most important tradition, drawing thousands of visitors annually. The cultural celebration also has a religious character, as the islands inhabitants attributed their victory over the Turks to the Virgin Mary.
Syros
On Syros you will experience a different side of the Cyclades. Ermoupoli, the capital of the Cyclades, stands apart from the other islands and impresses with its neoclassical buildings and Miaouli Square with the Town Hall- an architectural gem. The island never empties out completely, as many residents live here through the autumn and winter months as well.
In September, strolls through the aristocratic Vaporia quarter take on a different beauty, as does visiting the sights. Discover the Town Hall, a work by the famed architect Ernst Ziller and the historic Apollon Theater and climb the narrow lanes of Ano Syros for the striking views. The islands beaches are tranquil for those seeking relaxation. Swim at Kini, Agathopes and Galissas and revel in their pristine, clear waters.
Corfu
Corfu is an island for all seasons. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, enchants with its atmosphere. In the narrow lanes you will encounter mansions of rare beauty and architectural value, with Venetian, British and French influences. Corfu Town features impressive squares, and the landmarks are many and emblematic. In September visitors enjoy the same charms with fewer crowds.
Wander across Spianada, the largest square in the Balkans, savor your coffee at the famous Liston and explore the islands sights such as the Museum of Asian Art in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, the Church of Saint Spyridon, the Old and the New Fortress, Mon Repos as well as the Achilleion a few kilometers from the town. The islands beaches are truly countless to choose the one that suits you, whether organized or unorganized.
Chania
One of the busiest summer destinations in Crete, but also in all of Greece, Chania blends Venetian beauty with Cretan hospitality. The Old Town with its narrow cobbled alleys, Venetian and Ottoman buildings and the lighthouse at the Venetian Harbor, is an ideal backdrop for strolls. Walk through the Jewish Quarter and towards Splantzia Square. Visit the Church of Saint Nicholas, dating to the 14th century, the Archaeological Museum of Chania and the Firkas Fortress where the Maritime Museum of Crete is housed.
The beaches near Chania, such as exotic Balos, pink-hued Elafonisi and the endless Falassarna, are ideal for peaceful swims with fewer people. For adventure lovers, the famed Samaria Gorge offers a unique hike through nature, with far more pleasant temperatures than in August.
Nafplio
Nafplio is one of the most charming cities of the country. In September the ambience turns even more romantic, with alleys draped in bougainvillea and neoclassical mansions. Stroll the narrow streets and enjoy your coffee or drink by the sea or on the famed Syntagma Square. Especially towards the end of September, when the weather is cooler, its the perfect time to take a boat to the Bourtzi, walk around the Acronafplia castle and climb up to Palamidi for panoramic views across the town.
Nearby beaches are ideal for refreshing swims. Walk to Arvanitia or head a few kilometers out to Karathona Beach or to Tolo. Within easy reach youll also find monuments of archaeological interest such as Mycenae and the archaeological site of Epidaurus.
Mani
Wild landscapes meet History in Laconian and in Messenian Mani. It is one of the most impressive and distinctive regions of the Peloponnese, both in the summer months and in autumn. The heat recedes and the temperature is ideal for strolls through villages and sights. Wander Areopolis cobbled lanes and cafés, savor seafood and swim in the turquoise waters at Limeni and soak up the calm in Gerolimenas.
Perfect spots for late-afternoon, sunset swims include Kardamyli and Stoupa, while the most impressive hiking route leads to Cape Tainaro with its imposing lighthouse. Its also a great time to visit the Diros Cave, as in summer you might not find a ticket due to high demand.
Pelion
Pelion uniquely combines mountain and sea. In September the mountain villages begin to hint that autumn has arrived, while the beaches still keep a summery buzz. Pelions villages, whether in the mountains or by the sea, are picturesque and welcoming. For sea lovers, Mylopotamos, Agios Ioannis and Fakistra offer enchanting scenery. Nature excursions abound, with many trails for hiking and getting to know the area on foot.
Discover villages with impressive views and stone-built houses, such as Tsagarada with its plane trees, Portaria with its lovely squares and Makrinitsa with its incredible view over the Pagasitic Gulf. If youd like to try a special outing, in Milies youll find the starting point of «Moutzouris», the old small train whose route through nature leads to Ano Lechonia.
Parga
A jewel of Epirus that looks like an island, Parga impresses visitors even in the first days of autumn. Its picturesque alleys and colorful houses clinging to the hillside create a postcard-perfect scene. The Venetian Castle with its panoramic views is ideal for a stroll, as is the atmospheric little harbor that lights up in the evenings.
Enjoy the nearby beaches renowned for their waters, Valtos with its vast sandy shore, Lichnos with cerulean waters and the quieter Sarakiniko that is perfect for tranquil swims. Parga is an excellent base for excursions. Try a boat trip to Paxos or Syvota and a hike to the famed mythical springs of the Acheron.
