Palaio Trikeri is a tiny island of just 2.5 square kilometers with a few permanent residents. Here, time seems to have stood still and the landscape transports you to a Greece of another era. There are no cars on the island. Paths will lead you from one end of the island to the other, along wonderful routes through dense vegetation. The island has a single settlement, built almost within the olive grove.

On a rise in the middle of the island stands the old Byzantine monastery of Panagia Evangelistria, built in the 19th century, which from the outside resembles a fortress. The monastery has about 100 cells, a well-kept flagstone courtyard, and views towards the Aegean, Evia, the Pagasetic Gulf, and all of Pelion. From 1948 to 1953, more than 5,000 women - political exiles - lived here.

The islet is lush and features wonderful beaches with green-blue waters worth discovering – the best known are Prasini Ammos, Afetka, and Agia Sofia. You can reach the beaches either on foot, along enchanting paths that pass through olive groves, or by boat.

Palaio Trikeri has a few rooms to let and two tavernas in the picturesque little harbor serving fresh fish and seafood, straight from the caiques, to enjoy with local tsipouro.

How to get to Palaio Trikeri

To reach Palaio Trikeri, you'll need to cover a route of about 85 kilometers from Volos towards Alogoporos, which passes through some of Pelion's most beautiful seaside villages. Just before Alogoporos, you'll come across Trikeri, a Pelion village with an island vibe, built on a hillside. Once you reach Alogoporos's small harbor, you'll park and take a water taxi that will take you to the islet of Palaio Trikeri in just a few minutes.
