The future of Greek wine is green: The example of Dourakis Winery in Crete

In an era when the climate crisis is creating new challenges for viticulture, a family-run winery in Chania proves that sustainability isn't just a modern trend.

Since 1990 it has invested in organic farming, while today it combines renewable energy with showcasing Crete's indigenous grape varieties.

At a time when sustainability is climbing ever higher on the international winemaking agenda, Dourakis Winery, in Alikambos Apokoronas Chania, is a prime example of a family business that invested in protecting the environment long before it became a global priority.

The story begins in 1988, when Andreas Dourakis, having studied oenology in Germany and worked in major wineries abroad, returned to Crete to create his own winery. His goal was to showcase the wealth of Crete's vineyard and the potential of the local varieties. The first wine to be bottled was Logari, marking the start of a family journey that today spans nearly four decades.

Organic viticulture before it became a trend

As early as 1990, the Dourakis family began planting organic vineyards on small plots around Alikambos, adopting practices that prioritize the protection of the soil and the natural environment.

This approach evolved over the years. Since 2019, the winery has harnessed solar energy for its operation, while the responsible management of natural resources, the study of soils and the use of lighter bottles are part of its strategy to reduce its environmental footprint.

At a time when the wine sector is called to adapt to new climatic conditions, the example of Dourakis Winery highlights the importance of long-term planning and investing in more sustainable production methods.

Indigenous varieties at the forefront

Beyond its environmental philosophy, Dourakis Winery has consistently invested in showcasing Crete's indigenous varieties. From its early years of operation, Andreas Dourakis recognized the potential of the local vineyard, at a time when Cretan varieties had not yet gained the recognition they enjoy today.

Today, the winery's wines combine tradition with modern winemaking expertise, highlighting the distinctive characteristics of the Cretan terroir. Each label is a different expression of the land and the island's wine identity.

The new generation and the future of Cretan wine

Since 2007, Antonis and Evi Dourakis have taken an active role in the family business, continuing their father's vision with an emphasis on innovation, openness and sustainable development.

At the same time, the winery has evolved into a wine tourism destination, offering tastings and gastronomic experiences that connect wine with local culture and hospitality.
