That is set to change as a wave of new resorts opens here. Two of the most anticipated are tucked into hidden coves just south of the city. Celebrity favorite Nikki Beach Resort and Spa in Yiti Bay opens in 2025, with a beach club, luxurious beachfront villas, and a private marina to follow. In 2026, Anantara will open a resort at Bandar Al Khairan, with chalets and beachfront villas. For now, travelers can stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Muscat or The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat Resort, both of which opened in 2024. The best time to visit is from November to April, when temperatures are ideal.
Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
Karakol is the fourth-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, about 150 kilometers from the Kyrgyzstan-China border and 380 kilometers from the capital, Bishkek. As a destination it is undeniably remote, but the reopening of Karakol International Airport in December is set to make it more accessible than ever. The area is Central Asias adventure capital. From the rugged Tien Shan mountains to Lake Issyk-Kul, travelers can enjoy activities such as hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, and paragliding. In addition, Karakol Ski Resort is the highest ski resort in Central Asia, at an elevation of 3,040 meters, while a new ski area, Three Peaks, opening in 2026 in partnership with the French Société des Trois-Vallées, will attract even more winter-sports enthusiasts to the region. But adventure is only one part of Karakols appeal. The city is culturally rich, with many different ethnic groups living here, including Dungan, Uyghurs, Kalmyks, Uzbeks, Russians, and of course Kyrgyz. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
