Kapesovo: The small and tranquil village of Zagori

Kapesovo is a mountain retreat surrounded by the untamed nature of Epirus. This small and serene village in Zagori captivates with its houses and cobbled streets.

Beyond the well-trodden routes in the Zagori villages, there is a lesser-known and «less-traveled» part, with small and tranquil villages that are every bit as beautiful. Kapesovo, about 43 km. from Ioannina, is one of the best-preserved villages of Zagori, ideal for those seeking peaceful escapes. A mountain retreat surrounded by the wild nature of Epirus.

In Kapesovo you will breathe the fresh mountain air at 1.120 meters elevation, enjoy your stroll along the stone-paved cobbled streets and admire the mansions with traditional Zagori architecture. Make a stop in the village square to savor your coffee, a dessert or meze at the traditional café «Mezaria» located there.

As you gaze at the view, your eyes will fall on a beautiful building. It is the Paschaleios School, which was completed in 1861 and was a donation by two prominent residents, Konstantinos and Pavlos Paschalis. It was the largest school in Zagori and operated until 1985. The Paschaleios School owes its fame to its library and above all to the original copy of the Charter of Rigas Feraios kept there. Today the cultural association of the village has turned the ground floor into a folklore museum that recreates a traditional Zagori residence.

Kapesovo, however, is also famed for its painters - iconographers, known as «bogades», who in the 18th and 19th centuries adorned dozens of churches in Epirus. A visit to the Church of Agios Nikolaos (1793) located here eloquently proves the significance of their art.

Walking the Vradeto Steps

If you like hiking, do not miss following the stone path that connects Kapesovo with neighboring Vradeto. The famous Vradeto Steps, with its 1.100 stone-paved steps, is perhaps the most beautiful cobbled path in Epirus. This broad path, an outstanding example of local architecture, was until 1973 the only means of communication between the two villages. The nearly one-hour route is enchanting, with views of the surrounding area that impress. Arriving at Vradeto, which lies at an elevation of 1.340 m. (it is the highest village of Zagori), you will enjoy boundless views in every direction. Near the village lies the Beloi viewpoint from where you have the entire Vikos Gorge at your feet.
