Among the dozens of historic monasteries of Zagori, the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Monodendri stands out for its location. Built on the edge of the Vikos Gorge, it seems to hang in the air.
In the beautiful Zagorochoria, specifically in Monodendri, one of the first villages in the area to develop tourism, lies the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi. It is the most historic monastery in the region and one of the most picturesque sights in all the Zagorochoria.
What makes it stand out is both its construction, as it is made entirely of stone, and the magnificent view towards the spectacular Vikos Gorge, as it is literally built on the edge of the cliff. To get there, you will follow the short path that starts from the main square in Monodendri.
The monastery, dedicated to Agia Paraskevi, was founded in 1413-1414. It was built by the inhabitants of the neighboring village of Vitsa and at the personal expense of a local lord, the voivode Michail Therianos. The church is a small basilica, with a single nave and a wooden roof, surrounded by the monks cells. The churchs frescoes date in part from the early 15th century.
The monastery is built on the edge of a rugged rock that rises above the Vikos Gorge, one of the most important natural monuments in Greece. From the chapels purpose-built terrace, visitors can safely admire the gorge from above.
On your way back, a stop at the square in Monodendri is a must to enjoy your coffee and, of course, to taste the famed traditional pies. Then take a stroll to see the Rizario School and the restored Pantazis mansion, which operates as an exhibition space.
