Vovousa, Ioannina: The village split in two by the Aoos
Where Epirus seems to meet Macedonia, nestled in a valley encircled by dense forests, you will find Vovousa, the easternmost Vlach-speaking village of Zagori. It lies at an elevation of 1,000 meters and is 77 km from Ioannina. The Aoos River flows through the village, dividing it in two. The village likely took its name from the roar of the rivers waters. The setting is fairytale-like in every season, with the river cleaving the village in two, while all around spread forests of beech, fir and black pine.
Vovousa is adorned at its center with one of the most beautiful single-arched stone bridges in Zagori. It was built in 1748 by Alexios Misios and has been recognized as a newer archaeological monument. The Church of Saint George (1814) is the second most important attraction you will see in the village.
Vovousa is also known for its summer festival, dedicated to the protection of the environment, with events that promote sustainability and include music performances, theatrical plays, hiking excursions, workshops on herbal therapy, intangible cultural heritage and oral history.
