How to survive a long-haul flight

Tips to make your long flight easier.

Long journeys are exciting and offer the chance to discover different cultures and ways of life. However, they usually require taking one or more long flights.

Many hours in the air can be especially tiring in economy class if you aren't properly prepared. From choosing the right seat to dressing appropriately, there are several ways to make your journey more pleasant and restful. See below for useful tips that will help you reach your destination with greater comfort and less hassle.

Choose your seat early

Especially on a long flight, it's important to choose your seat early and not leave it to the last minute. If you prefer to get up easily and often during the flight, it's best to choose an aisle seat, while if you like gazing outside or leaning on it, go for a window seat. For more space, you can book the seat next to the emergency exit. Don't delay your choice, because once seats are taken you'll sit wherever there's an empty spot.

Dress appropriately

What you wear makes a very important difference on a flight. To start, it's ideal to wear comfortable clothes and not, for example, tight jeans, as you'll be sitting or sleeping for many hours and won't feel at ease. Layer up so you won't get cold or too warm. The airport might feel very cold or hot from the air conditioning, but the temperature on the plane can be different. On long flights, however, airlines usually provide blankets.

Pack an essentials pouch

In your backpack or carry-on, pack a small pouch with everything you'll need during those hours in the air. Your charger is essential, as you'll find a USB port at your seat. Bring any medications you might need, painkillers, vitamins, or any medication you take on a daily basis. Additionally, you can include in your bag earplugs, sanitizing wipes, contact lenses and solution, your glasses, as well as a toothbrush and toothpaste, lip balm, hand cream and face moisturizer for hydration.

Sleep at the right times

As hard as it sounds, it will really help your body to sleep at the right times on the plane. Check what time it is at your destination and try to sleep according to those hours. It will help you adjust faster and reduce the effects of jet lag more quickly. Make sure you also have a neck pillow so you don't get stiff.

Download music and movies

On larger aircraft there are usually screens that let you choose movies and music. However, if you'd like to listen to your own music or watch a favorite series, you should make sure to download them to your phone or tablet in advance so they play offline. Even though some flights offer Wi-Fi, it can lag.
