What not to wear on a plane

What not to wear to be comfortable on a plane trip? See how to prepare properly for a flight to avoid mishaps.

Preparing for the trip is important, from the routes we will follow to the activities and the restaurants where well dine. Equally important, however, is what well put in our suitcase, as well as the right clothes we should wear on our flight.

From the abrupt temperature changes inside the airport and the airplane to proper blood circulation, the clothes you choose can influence far more than your style. Our experts advise what to avoid when flying and what to choose for a safer, more comfortable journey.

Very tight clothes

All experts agree that tight clothes have no place on a plane. Especially on long flights, its best to avoid tight clothing, as the body swells due to altitude and it becomes uncomfortable. In contrast, comfortable clothing greatly helps with better blood circulation.

Long or short clothes

While planes are cleaned promptly between flights, they aren’t as clean as we might think. Long dresses, skirts, and trousers that trail on the floor end up "sweeping" the cabin floor and the restroom too. By the same token, short shorts or crop tops leave skin exposed on seats that may not have been cleaned properly.

Jumpsuits and bulky outerwear

While jumpsuits may look very stylish at the airport, they make things tricky when you want to visit the airplane’s tiny restroom. On the other hand, bulky outerwear may be necessary at your destination, but experts advise keeping it in your luggage as it could hinder you in an emergency evacuation. Instead, they recommend layers that can be taken off easily.

Clothes considered inappropriate

Pay attention to what you wear, because the wrong outfit could cost you the trip itself. Airlines can deny boarding or even remove passengers due to attire. Clothing with offensive words, political messages, or provocative graphics may violate dress codes designed to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety on a flight.

The wrong shoes

High heels may complement an outfit, but on a plane they should be avoided. A journey can involve long distances in airports, unexpected sprints to the gate, or stairs to board. Stilettos, therefore, have no place in our outfit. They can also slow you down in an emergency, and even damage evacuation slides. They may also pinch if your feet swell during the flight.

Like heels, flip-flops may suit your holidays but not the journey. The reasons are several: in enclosed spaces, bare feet aren’t pleasant, especially if they sweat. In emergencies, flip-flops are dangerous as you can trip very easily. It’s better in any case to opt for comfortable sneakers.

Watches and jewelry

It’s important to know that airport security scanners will not be triggered if you’re wearing gold or silver jewelry. To move quickly through security for your flight, keep your jewelry to a minimum and place anything likely made of magnetic metal in your bag. Also don’t forget to remove your smartwatch before the screening and place it with your phone and carry-on, as it may trigger the alarm.

What to wear on the journey

Frequent travelers recommend practical choices that will save you on the plane. Wear comfortable, wrinkle-resistant layers you can put on and take off easily. Avoid white, as you can stain it very easily with your food or drink.
