Kolona: Dive into the spectacular double beach of Kythnos

Swimming at Kolona is a must if you visit Kythnos. It is the islands most famous beach and one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades.

You need just two hours from Lavrio and three hours from the port of Piraeus to reachKythnos, an island that will charm you with its simplicity and authentic Cycladic beauty. There are many reasons to fall in love with this Cycladic island. One of them is the countlessbeachesof the island, which are mostly sandy and for the most part unorganized.

The island’s most famous beach - and one of the finest in the Cyclades - is Kolona. This much-photographed beach is located in the northwest part of the island, north of the port of Merichas and after Apokrousi access is via a relatively rough dirt road, but the beach’s beauty will reward you.

Kolona beach is distinctive mainly because of its unique morphology. The strip of sand that connects the coast of Kythnos with the islet of Agios Loukas (it’s worth visiting the picturesque little chapel at the top) creates two beautiful and sheltered beaches to the right and left. The beach has azure, crystal-clear waters and thick, golden sand.

Thanks to its location, both sides are protected from the wind, making Kolona a magnet for boats. Because the road to reach the beach is a bit demanding, many visitors choose to arrive by water taxi from Merichas. It is not an organized beach, but a restaurant-bar operates a little higher up from the beach.
