The stunning artificial lake of the Aoos Springs, at an altitude of 1.350 meters, is the highest large lake in Greece.
If you find yourself inMetsovo, it’s worth the trip to the artificial Lake Aoos (or Aoos Springs Lake), about 20 km northwest of the village. Thereyou will encounter an alpine landscape of rare beauty that enchants in every season. Aoos Springs Lake was constructed in 1987 on the Politses Plateau for power generation. It is designated as a landscape of special natural beauty and lies at an elevation of 1,350 meters, making it the highest-altitude large lake in Greece.
The lake lies between two National Parks, Valia Calda and Vikos-Aoos. To the north rise Mavrovouni, Flega and Tsouka Rosa, while to the south stretch the hills and forests around Chrysovitsa and Metsovo.
The lake’s area is 11.5 sq. km. The shoreline is long and lacy with beautiful forested mini fjords and many islets forming within it. The broad meadows, dozens of small streams with a constant flow of water, small natural lakes and dense beech forests that begin just beyond the shores make the area especially important for many species of fauna and flora.
Among the region’s rich flora you’ll find, among others, black pine, beech and rare orchid species. It is a refuge for many mammal species such as bears, roe deer and wolves. The spring waters are home to the alpine newt, chub and trout.
You can drive around the lake, as well as take walks along its shores. What’s certain is the lake’s tranquil scenery will relax you and reward you with many wonderful photos.
