Greece, beyond its enchanting beaches, also boasts other sources of cool relief, ideal for summer dips. Magical places amid nature and in the mountains offer travelers an alternative yet equally delightful experience. The rivers of the country provide refreshment in the heatwave, as well as opportunities for adventure for the more daring. Below we present 4 rivers ideal for dips and rafting, so you can add them to your summer list this year.

Acheron

One of the best-known and most popular rivers in Greece, the Acheron, cools hundreds of visitors daily in summer. The mythical river of Epirus has been loved by nature enthusiasts and many others. Its original springs lie on the highlands of Mount Tomaros, but better known are the springs located two kilometers outside the village of Glyki, in Thesprotia. There you can admire the beauty of nature, plunge into the river waters and engage in a variety of activities, such as rafting, canoe-kayak, horse riding, archery and hiking. Cafés and restaurants are ready to offer walkers a rest beside the banks.

Voidomatis

One of the jewels of Epirus is the Voidomatis River, in the Vikos–Aoos National Park beside the Zagorochoria. Its crystalline waters maintain a steady temperature of 4C° and it is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Greece, and in all of Europe. Amid small waterfalls you will have the chance to dive in and admire the scenery, while if you love adventure, the Voidomatis is one of the most popular destinations for rafting. Do not miss visiting the Vikos Gorge to savor the breathtaking view.

In Northern Greece, the Nestos River is one of the largest in the country, delineating the border between Macedonia and Thrace. Known for its delta and its significant wetland, it offers an escape for those seeking alternative holidays. Along its length from Stavroupoli to Toxotes you will find beaches for swimming. Its calm waters, however, are ideal for rafting even for beginners. Combine your visit with a stroll in the forest, hiking in nature and a meal beside the river waters. Before or after your river excursion, wander through the village of Paranesti which lies beside the forest.

Arachthos

The Arachthos - or Metsovitikos, since it springs from the Metsovo region - is one of the most impressive rivers in Greece. It flows into the Ambracian Gulf, crossing a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty, in the prefecture of Ioannina as well as Arta. The waters of the river are transparent and crystal-clear and lend themselves to cool dips in natural pools formed among rocks, especially in the summer months. Rafting on the Arachthos is extremely popular, as there are routes for all levels, with gentle descents for beginners but also demanding ones for the more experienced. Passing through gorges, narrow rocky passages and spots with waterfalls creates an unforgettable experience.
