The Komolithi of Potamida in Kissamos are among the most unusual and striking landscapes you will encounter in Crete.
Amid the many beauties of Greece there are places that resemble... alien landscapes. One such otherworldly landscape, among the most unusual yet striking natural monuments in all of Greece, lies in Crete. We are talking about the Komolithiin the village of Potamida Kissamou, about 35 km west of the city of Chania.
These are hills of soft clay that have been eroded over time, creating an impressive spectacle. Experts say they were formed millions of years ago on the seabed.
These curious formations that recall Cappadocia, are just a few meters from the village houses on a very flat piece of land. The hills are bare of vegetation on the sides but with shrubs on their tops. It is worth a short detour during your visit to Elafonisi to admire this little-known and astonishing attraction sculpted by nature.
