Polyaigos: An azure oasis in the heart of the Cyclades

Polyaigos, a small gem hidden between Kimolos and Milos, awaits your discovery. The islands enchanting beaches attract sailing yachts and other boats that run sea excursions from the neighboring islands.

Did you know that the largest uninhabited island of the Aegean lies betweenKimolos andMilos? It is called Polyaigos and it is one of those magical corners of Greece you see and wish you could teleport to! A blue oasis with exotic waters in the heart of the Cyclades.

This little island is located 2 km southeast of Kimolos (to which it belongs administratively), 6.2 km east of Milos and 15 km southwest of Sifnos. It covers an area of about 18.146 sq. km and in the 2001 census it appeared uninhabited. According to the 2011 census, however, it is inhabited by a couple of herders. In 1951 it had 14 inhabitants, while even earlier it is reported that 170 people lived there.

Polyaigos is part of the Natura 2000 program as an important habitat. The Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus gives birth to its pups here. The island is used mainly as grazing land, which also explains the name "Polyaigos" - from "many goats", that is "many goats".

The landscape is incredible - the impressive rock formations rising out of the sea will leave you open-mouthed. Majestic rocky cliffs alternate with sandy beaches, while the deep-blue, crystal-clear waters will surely make you forget the time and swim for hours! The islands enchanting beaches attract sailboats, yachts and many other vessels that run sea tours from the neighboring islands.

On Polyaigos you can swim in the bays of Pano and Kato Mersini, at Blue Waters (true to its name), at Ammoura beach and at Panagia (a large beach with blonde sand). Sailing around the island you will see spectacular geological formations, natural pools and mysterious caves you will not stop photographing.

Since 1898, there has been a lighthouse on Polyaigos, located at Cape Maskoula, at an elevation of 138 meters, on the eastern side of the island. The ascent (from Ammoura beach) is quite challenging, but the view from up there will reward you. Also on the island there are ruined dwellings scattered in various places, while in the northwestern part you will see the ruins of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary that was founded in 1622.

Access to Polyaigos is either by private boat or by caiques that run sea excursions from Kimolos. One thing is certain, the tour around the island will be unforgettable.
