From much-photographed sandy beaches with turquoise waters to small secluded coves, the shores of the Small Cyclades offer a magical setting.
Everyday life in the Small Cyclades moves at an unhurried pace and summer feels like other times. Koufonisia, Donousa, Schinoussa and Iraklia, together with the smaller and uninhabited islets of the cluster, still hold on to their authenticity with golden sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and little coves.
The beaches of the Small Cyclades don't need beach bars and sunbeds to make an impression. Their unspoiled natural scenery makes them among the most beautiful not only in the Cyclades, but across the entire Aegean. Some are easily accessible on foot, others require a short walk and some you reach by boat. The common characteristic of all is the turquoise waters and the sandy shores that evoke an exotic destination.
Pori, Koufonisia
Pori is the largest and most impressive beach on Pano Koufonisi. One of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the Cyclades, it's a short distance from Chora, about half an hour on foot, or a few minutes by boat. The pale sand and crystal-clear waters make it stand out. The beach isn't organized, but you'll find coffee and food nearby. It's also worth exploring the distinctive natural formations close by, such as Gala and the Devil's Eye, a natural pool in the rocks.
Italida, Koufonisia
Italida, also known as Platia Pounta, is one of the island's most popular beaches. A short distance from Pori on Pano Koufonisi, the beach draws nearly everyone on the island each day. The golden sand and vivid blue-green waters create a scene that feels almost exotic, while the relatively easy access makes it especially popular. It's not organized and it fills up quickly. If you want to enjoy it in peace, aim to go very early in the morning.
Detis, Koufonisia
For those who want to escape the crowds and unwind, a trip to Kato Koufonisi is worth it. The uninhabited island offers more pristine landscapes and beaches reached by boat from Pano Koufonisi. One of the island's most beautiful shores is Detis, with white sand, shallow blue-green waters and striking rock formations. Sheltered from the wind, it feels like a secluded paradise, as there are no organized facilities nearby.
Tsigouri, Schinoussa
Tsigouri beach is one of Schinoussa's best-known shores and lies very close to Chora. The golden sand, clear waters and easy access make it a first choice for those holidaying there. There are accommodations and restaurants nearby and it's ideal for families. It faces Iraklia and the sunset, and there are tamarisk trees to relax in the shade. Within swimming distance lies the heart-shaped islet of Plaka, which you can reach by swimming.
Psili Ammos, Schinoussa
A beautiful sandy beach with fine golden sand and clear, blue-green waters sets an idyllic scene for summer dips. Psili Ammos is relatively small and fringed with low vegetation, while its natural beauty remains unpretentious. Its name comes from the fine sand and it's located close to the settlement of Mesaria. It's not organized and manages to keep its authenticity.
Kedros, Donousa
Donousa's captivating beach was once a favorite with campers. The small bay on the island's south side impresses at first sight. The sandy shore and clear blue-green waters create an unforgettable setting. Kedros is about 15-20 minutes on foot from Chora and 5 minutes by car. Its seabed is ideal for snorkeling and exploration, as there's also the wreck of a ship that sank during World War II. On the beach you'll also find a café- restaurant.
Livadi, Donousa
One of Donousa's most beautiful beaches with blue-green waters, Livadi, lies in a more secluded part of the island, in a sheltered cove near the settlement of Mersini. Access is via a footpath or by boat, which gives it a quieter atmosphere. It captures the island's authentic character, as there are no sunbeds, only a few tamarisk trees for shade.
Agios Georgios, Iraklia
Agios Georgios beach is located at Iraklia's port and stands out for its tamarisk trees and calm waters. It's ideal for a first swim on arrival on the island, and it's also preferred by families as the waters are shallow. It's one of the easiest beaches to reach on foot and it's just a few steps from hotels and tavernas.
Livadi, Iraklia
Iraklia's largest beach, Livadi, is a sandy shore with clear waters and views towards Schinoussa. It's worth putting on your schedule if you're after a laid-back swim on one of the quietest islands of the Small Cyclades. It's one of the most popular choices for visitors, with crystal-clear waters and sand. You can get there in 5 minutes by car, or in 20 minutes on foot from Chora.
