It's impossible to go to Corfu and not take a dip in the crystal-clear, refreshing waters of the famed Paleokastritsa, which is located in the island's northwestern part, 25 km from Corfu Town. The enchanting coves of Paleokastritsa
The beaches of Paleokastritsa have sand and pebbles, crystal-clear turquoise waters (but quite cold even on the hottest days), and a backdrop of the area's impressive, lush landscape. First you'll come across the organized beach of Agia Triada. At the end of Paleokastritsa, below the monastery, lies the area's most famous beach, Agios Spyridon. Both beaches offer water sports and diving lessons for adventure lovers.
There are also smaller bays for swimming, such as Alypa, Agios Petros, Ampelaki, and Platyakia. A little after the entrance to the village lies the enchanting cove La Grotta with the bar of the same name (La Grotta). Go down the 142 stone steps to dive off the rocks into the crystal-clear waters. To discover the area's hidden beauties, we suggest renting a boat and exploring the beaches that are accessible only by sea (such as Chomi Beach or Paradise) to enjoy the sun and the sea away from the crowds.
The impressive sea caves
Don't miss the chance to take a boat ride to the area's magnificent sea caves. Each cave has its own story. The most famous of these is Nausicaa's Cave. The sun's rays as they reflect on the rocks and the deep, crystal-clear waters will definitely tempt you into a refreshing dip.
Visit the historic Monastery of Paleokastritsa
After your swims, take a stroll to the Monastery of Paleokastritsa perched on the hill. It was built in 1228, but its present buildings date to the 18th century. You'll be impressed by the wonderful sea views from many points of the monastery, the cobbled courtyard with its wide arches and bougainvilleas, as well as the small museum which, besides relics and icons, also hosts the bones of a marine mammal.
Picturesque Lakones with superb views
Lakones is one of Corfu's most beautiful traditional villages. Built on the lush mountainside above Paleokastritsa, this village has many old houses and narrow lanes, and it owes its fame to the excellent view it offers over the area's coves. The best spot to enjoy this view is the Bella Vista location on the road to Krini.
Sunset at Angelokastro
Near Lakones, you can also see Angelokastro, the ruined Byzantine fortress on the sheer summit of a hill. In this once-impregnable fortress, with its significant strategic position, it's said that 3,000 residents of the surrounding villages found refuge, pursued by the Turks in 1537. At the top of its acropolis stands the chapel of Archangel Michael. Take a breath and climb up for the breathtaking view and one of the best sunsets you'll see in Corfu.
