Mavra Volia: The «black» beach of Chios that is unlike any other

One of the Aegean's most distinctive beaches lies on Chios and owes its beauty to a natural phenomenon thousands of years in the making.

With over 90 beaches, rich history, enchanting landscapes and medieval villages, Chios is an island that truly caters to every taste. The land of mastiha is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. One of them is the beach Mavra Volia, or Mavros Gialos as the locals call it.

Mavra Volia lies on Chios' southwestern side, a few kilometers from the picturesque settlement of Emporios. It's a natural treasure that impresses visitors with its rare volcanic landscape and crystal clear waters. It's considered one of Chios' most important attractions and every summer it draws travelers from across Greece and abroad.

How Chios' landmark beach was formed

The beach's name is no coincidence, as it comes from the distinctive black pebbles that cover its entire shore. They were formed by the activity of the now dormant Psaronas volcano thousands of years ago. The volcanic origin of the ground lends the beach a striking look, with glossy black pebbles contrasting with the crystal clear waters of the sea.

The shoreline is divided into two sections, with the first being easily accessible and more popular. The waters are deep, pristine and an intense shade of blue that shifts with the sunlight throughout the day.

Tips

Especially in August the beach gets very crowded, so if you want to enjoy it in peace, it's worth going early in the morning. The beach isn't organized and has managed to keep its authentic character, while it has a canteen for basic supplies. Since there's no natural shade at all, it's a good idea to bring an umbrella.

A short distance from the beach lies the traditional settlement of Emporios, where you can enjoy fresh fish and local flavors. The area is an ideal choice for those who want to combine a swim with a stroll and a visit to the famed village of Pyrgi, which is about 5 km away. Mavra Volia is easily accessible from the town of Chios, at a distance of about 30 kilometers.
