Telegraph: The natural wonder in Greece you must see once in your life

From towering cliffs to spectacular lakes and otherworldly landscapes, Europe is home to natural wonders worth seeing at least once in your lifetime.

Grand and captivating cities, history and culture are what come to mind when we talk about Europe. Yet beyond the urban centers, monuments and museums, Europe hides an impressive and wild side. Gorges carved by turquoise waters, lakes that seem to float, imposing rocks and landscapes you can hardly believe are real, compose a different map of the continent.

The Telegraph has compiled 15 of Europe's most impressive natural wonders, from Norway to Romania and from Croatia to Sweden. Among them is a unique place in Greece that's worth seeing up close at least once in your life.

Meteora: A wonder of nature and human determination

Perched atop imposing sandstone rocks that rise above the Thessalian plain, Meteora seem to hover between earth and sky. Beyond being the second most important monastic complex in Greece after Mount Athos, they are a place of unparalleled beauty and a geological phenomenon of global significance. In the 14th century, Orthodox monks sought absolute seclusion here, building their monasteries on the inaccessible rock summits. To reach them, they climbed rope ladders, while supplies were transported in nets and by pulleys. This landscape remains unforgettable to anyone lucky enough to see it up close.

Today, access is easy via steps, yet the sight remains spellbinding. Six monasteries are still active and open to the public. The trails that cross the imposing rocks lead to hidden caves and old hermitages. The experience becomes truly magical at sunrise or sunset, when the light passes between the towering rocks and bathes them in shades of red and gold.
