5 trips of a lifetime for solo travellers

Some of the most thrilling journeys you can take on your own around the world.

Solo travel isnt just a new trend. Traveling alone is certainly a challenge - to many it can even seem intimidating. But its also an experience, refreshing and liberating. The sense of freedom, the flexibility, new connections and the chance to discover yourself are some of the reasons that will inspire you to choose such a journey. As for the destination? Here are a few ideas to help you take the plunge.

With landscapes of singular beauty - from glaciers to volcanoes and from waterfalls to geothermal springs - Iceland is a truly distinctive travel destination for solo travellers. Icelands capital, Reykjavik, feels approachable and can be your base. Youll go out to characterful bars and restaurants, shop for original pieces by Icelandic designers and see unique contemporary art exhibitions. Musts include excursions to the open-air geothermal spa Blue Lagoon, the imposing Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park. Iceland is also one of the places where you can observe (if youre lucky) the Northern Lights, natures most spectacular show. The impressive colors that "dance" in the night sky of the polar regions are the perfect excuse for a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The months with the best chances of seeing the phenomenon are from September to April, and one of the best locations to observe it is the Hofdabrekka area in the south of the country, 2.5 hours drive from Reykjavik.

Japan

From impressive temples and high-speed trains to the customs of geishas and the colorful world of video games and manga, the Land of the Rising Sun holds many surprises that wont fail to enchant you. There is so much to see and explore in Japan and one of the best ways to do it is to travel on your own. In Tokyo youll visit traditional temples and the famed Japanese gardens, delve into the art of Japanese cuisineand discover a thrilling city that challenges the senses of the Western visitor. In Kyoto, the pace is slower and more relaxed. Its a city straight out of a postcard: gilded temples and shrines adorned with crimson torii gates, kimono-clad geisha gliding silently through cobbled alleys and matcha tea served with ritual precision, always in keeping with tradition.

The land of the long white cloud Aotearoa, as it is called in the language of the indigenous Maori, is a paradise for solo travelers seeking adventures in nature. New Zealand, made up of two main islands (North and South Island) and a number of smaller ones, prides itself on the diversity of its landscapes. It is considered one of the safest countries, while Auckland, the largest and most cosmopolitan city, often features on lists of the best cities in the world to live in. Mind-blowing landscapes, lush forests, glaciers, lakes, rivers and fjords, golden beaches, unspoiled islets and thrilling activities such as sailing, kayaking, surfing, bungee jumping but also wine tastings will enrich your experiences.

Laos

Laos doesnt have Thailands level of tourism, but it has everything you seek in a Southeast Asia adventure: jungle treks, swimming in blue lagoons and endless natural beauty. A riverboat journey on the Mekong, the relaxed atmosphere of the capital Vientiane and a visit to the historic royal city of Luang Prabang, one of the countrys most important Buddhist centers, are some of the experiences that make Laos a paradise for solo travelers.

Nature and the unique shifts of scenery make Chile an ideal destination for those who choose trips that take you to the extremes. From the Atacama Desert (the driest place in the world) in the north to Patagonia with its glaciers in the south, this country, which occupies a narrow coastal strip between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, is a fascinating destination that wont leave anyone indifferent. Adventure meets cosmopolitan flair in the capital, Santiago, a friendly city you can explore easily on foot or by bike.
