According to the latest Conde Nast Traveller list, Europes number one culinary destination is in Greece.
The new «Best Places to Eat» list by Conde Nast Traveller presents the top gastronomic destinations for 2026 and takes us from the Mediterranean to the Far East and from Australia to Latin America. The renowned magazine singled out 10 destinations that promise to offer an unforgettable gastronomic experience to travelers in the new year. The list includes only two destinations in Europe, with a Greek one in second place.
Crete a top culinary destination in Europe
It is a major distinction for Crete, which is the first European destination to appear in the Conde Nast Traveller list this year. A key part of the travel experience that Crete offers is, without a doubt, its cuisine, which is renowned worldwide. From its famous olive oil and certified graviera cheese to mouthwatering meat and the heady tsikoudia, the products of the Cretan land are simply unique.
«In this historic corner of Greece, handmade pastry and mountain herbs pair ideally with savory seafood and wine from ancient vines», writes Conde Nast Traveller about Crete. The article notes that the island of Crete, which was named European Region of Gastronomy for 2026, is known for healthy eating since the ancient Minoans, emphasizing that much of the diversity of the products of Crete can be attributed to the range of its landscapes.
Each of the four regions of Crete – Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi– has its own specialties prepared from this abundance of Cretan produce. The magazine makes special mention of the extra virgin olive oil, the cornerstone of the Cretan diet.
