Astypalea, or the butterfly of the Aegean as its widely known, is one of the most authentic islands in the Dodecanese. Travelers seeking tranquility, impressive views and a close connection with nature wont be disappointed. Its an ideal destination for exploration and offers a different experience for solo travelers. Climb up to the Querini Castle, built by the Venetian family atop the ancient acropolis in the 15th century, and enjoy the sunset. The picturesque Chora, which looks straight out of a Cycladic island, will be unforgettable.

In Astypalea youll revel at the festivals held all summer, the biggest being for the Virgin Mary. The festivities last three days (14 to 16 August) and take place in the courtyard of Panagia Portaitissa. The beaches with their turquoise waters will amaze you. Swim at beautiful Livadi, at Agios Konstantinos or at Kaminakia, which you can reach by caique. Dont miss the local gastronomy—cheeses, bread, zucchini flowers and handmade pasta.

The magic of nature meets inner serenity on Nisyros, the volcanic island of the southern Aegean. Here youll find plenty of travelers who love nature and hiking, and youll holiday far from mass tourism. The islands atmosphere is unpretentious, creating a setting thats perfect for listening to your thoughts and getting to know the locals. Walk inside the impressive Stefanos volcano crater and visit the Nisyros Volcanological Museum for a complete experience. Follow the hiking trails along the islands crest and climb to the Castle of Mandraki, where the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani stands. At Paliokastro youll see the fortification of the ancient city of Nisyros—one of the best-preserved defenses in the Aegean—dating to the 4th century BC.

The Castle of Kythiras Chora stands out, where youll stroll, admire the sea views and enjoy food and your morning coffee at the spots tucked into its narrow lanes. However, its the islands beautiful villages that will steal your heart. Visit the little harbor of Avlemonas for food and swims at the small beach, the main village of Potamos with its open-air market every Sunday, the seaside Agia Pelagia and Mylopotamos with its cafés in the shade of the trees.
