The island of Odysseus is a paradise for those who love crystal-clear waters and lush green landscapes. These are Ithaca's beaches you must dive into.
Mythic, lush green, steeped in history and with landscapes straight out of a painting, Ithaca, one of the Ionian's most tranquil islands, attracts many loyal visitors who choose it every summer for relaxing holidays. Odysseus' mythical homeland invites travelers to wander through traditional Ionian villages and dive into wonderful waters. Here are some of Ithaca's most distinctive beaches where you can lose yourself in the deep blue.
Gidaki
Gidaki beach, in the island's southeast, is undoubtedly one of the Ionian's most beautiful. Its calm, crystal-clear waters, white pebbles and the open bay with views to the islet of Atokos create a scene that impresses every visitor. There's a path leading to the beach that winds through pines and shrubs starting from the neighboring bay of Skinos, but the easiest way to reach Gidaki is by the small boats that depart daily from Ithaca's port. The beach also has a canteen.
Filiatro
The island's most cosmopolitan (and organized) beach is Filiatro. It's in the south of the island and you can reach it by road from Vathy in about 15 minutes. The beach is pebbly and the waters - as on every beach in Ithaca - are clear, turquoise and impeccably clean. There's a beach bar with sunbeds, umbrellas, coffee and food.
Afales
If you love beaches of wild beauty, then you have to swim at Afales. Following the road from the village of Platrithia, you'll reach a wonderful beach set in a deep bay, with coarse white pebbles and gorgeous turquoise waters. Nearby, two more secluded beaches, Kouloumi and Perivoli, «lie hidden», for those seeking absolute tranquility.
Platynammos
Platia Ammos or Platynammos lies at the island's northwestern tip, in the bay of Afales. Here, the setting feels almost exotic. White sand, heavenly waters and sheer cliffs. The beach has no facilities and access is only by boat or by small boat.
Sarakiniko
Another lovely cove wrapped in greenery is Sarakiniko. It's essentially two beaches linked by a small footpath, which lie very close to Vathy (4 km.). There are no facilities, so make sure you bring the essentials with you.
