The picturesque Chora of Anafi

Climbing up from the port of Agios Nikolaos, after a 3 km route, you will reach Chora,the islands only organized settlement. Small, picturesque and whitewashed, built amphitheatrically above the port at an altitude of 260 meters, like a balcony suspended over the Aegean, Anafis Chorais one of the most beautiful in the Aegean.

Its distinctive feature is the numerous vaulted single-room houses with blue windows, while its narrow alleys lead to the old Venetian castle at the heart of the settlement. Among Choras sights are also the picturesque windmills that stand on the hillside.

The landmark and jewel of Anafi is - visible from wherever you stand on the island - Kalamos,in its southeastern part, 22 km from Chora. It is an imposing limestone rock 460 m high, connected to the rest of the island via a small isthmus. In fact, it is considered the second largest in the Mediterranean after Gibraltar.It is a beloved climbing field and is included within the Natura network of protected areas.

At its highest edge stands theMonastery of Kalamiotissa,dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which is inextricably linked with legends and local traditions. The view from here will stay unforgettable. The more romantic begin the ascent of the rock in the afternoon, spend the night with sleeping bags in the monastery courtyard and wait to watch the sunrise over the Aegean. On the northern side of Kalamos lies the Drakontospilo, a cave inaccessible from the sea and reachable only by a path.Its impressive mouth exceeds 10 m in height.

Anafi is the ideal destination for lovers of hiking.The island boasts many trails that are easy to access and will lead you tochapels, farmhouses and other distinctive spotssuch as the ancient city, Kastelli, and to Anafis highest mountain, Vigla. By following the trails you can also reach the islands beautiful sandy beaches and small coves, such as Katsouni, Flamourou and Agioi Anargyroi.

The beaches of Anafi

Anafis beaches are one of its strong cards. On the southern side of the island, the beaches are sandy, sheltered and more popular. You can reach these beaches on foot, by boat or by bus. On the northern side, the beaches are rocky and quieter. The large and sandy beach of Roukounas,once synonymous with free camping, is Anafis most famous beach. Kleisidi is another lovely sandy beach, with trees for shade. It is close to the port and has easy access.

From Kleisidi, by walking a path for 10 minutes, you can reach the small beachKatsouni. After Katsouni, youll find Flamourou, a beach with blond sand and imposing rocks. For more relaxation, visit Agioi Anargyroi, oneof the islands most remote beaches, with the namesake picturesque little chapel above the sand. Finally, Livoskoposis a small and secluded beach of distinctive natural beauty on the northern side of the island.

Food and entertainment spots

  • At the Akrogiali taverna, at the port, try the fish soup and home-cooked dishes.
  • The Armenaki fish tavern in Chora has balconies with impressive views over the Aegean. In the evening it also features live music.
  • At Liotrivi youll enjoy fresh fish, meze and tasty home-cooked dishes, along with the gorgeous view.
  • A good choice for fresh fish is also Anemos in Chora. Be sure to try the kakavia.
  • On the way to the square, the traditional little taverna Astrakhan is a classic choice for traditional cuisine.
  • Margarita in Kleisidi is a mustfor breakfast, and fordelicious homemade food after a swim at the lovely beach.
  • Madres is the islands legendary bar and one of the best places to enjoy the sunrise.
