Tsepelovo, 50 km north of Ioannina, ranks among the most beautiful villages in the area. Built at an elevation of over one thousand meters on the slopes of Tymfi, this stately chief village with its unique Epirote architecture is perfectly in harmony with the natural environment around it.
Tsepelovo: One of the most beautiful villages of Zagori
Tsepelovo served as the administrative center of Zagori from the 18th century. The rich history of the village is inextricably linked to the Greek War of Independence, as from here the poet Ioannis Vilaras and the Teacher of the Nation Athanasios Psalidas led the first phase of the Struggle in 1820.
Stone also takes center stage here. The village has been designated a traditional settlement, with many of its buildings listed. Stone-built mansions with handsome courtyard gates, cobbled lanes and a beautiful square with towering plane trees shape the character of the settlement.
In the square you will see the Church of Saint Nicholas, dating from 1753, with its hexagonal bell tower and frescoes by painters from Kapesovo. Next to the church, there is a beautiful stone building with blue windows, which opened in 1874 as a pharmacy, was later converted into a post office, and today serves as an art space.
Just outside Tsepelovo, above the so-called Vikaki Gorge, stands the stone-built Monastery of Rogovou, constructed in the years 1028-1034 and renovated in 1745, with well-preserved frescoes.
