Sikinos: The authentic serenity of the Cyclades

Sikinos remains an authentic haven in the Cyclades. An island that has kept its traditional character unspoiled and offers holidays filled with tranquility.

There are still islands that resist the noise of mass tourism, preserving their identity and authentic character intact. Sikinos is one of them. Nestled between Ios and Folegandros, it seems to have stopped time, offering visitors tranquility, simplicity, and a meaningful connection with the Cycladic landscape.

Sikinos will win you over with its unhurried pace, its serene atmosphere, the whitewashed houses climbing the hills, the cobbled alleys, authentic flavors, and the feeling that here holidays still retain their old, genuine character.

The island's heart beats in Chora, one of the best-preserved traditional settlements in the Cyclades. In fact, it consists of two neighboring settlements, Kastro and Chorio, which merge harmoniously to create an ensemble full of Cycladic charm. Kastro is the oldest core of the settlement. Built amphitheatrically for protection from pirates, it still preserves its fortified form. The narrow passages, white walls, and small courtyards with bougainvillea create scenes that recall another era.

A little further on spreads Chorio, with its squares, traditional cafés and tavernas where life flows slowly and calmly. Sunset from Chora's alleys is an experience that's hard to forget, as the sun sinks into the Aegean, painting the white houses with golden hues.

The island's port is Alopronia, a small and welcoming seaside settlement. Ferries arrive there and it's home to one of Sikinos's most popular beaches. The calm waters and laid-back atmosphere set the tone for the holidays that follow from the very first moment.

History and culture

Despite its small size, Sikinos has significant monuments and sights. The most important of these is Episkopi, a unique archaeological and historical monument located just outside Chora. It's a 3rd-century AD Roman funerary monument that was later converted into a Christian church. Its architecture and distinctive history make it one of the most interesting monuments in the Cyclades.

Also of particular interest is the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, also known as Chrysopigi. Built in a strategic position with panoramic views over the Aegean, it resembles a small fortress. The monastery was founded in the 17th century and is one of the island's most important religious monuments. In Chora it's also worth visiting the Folklore Museum, where objects from residents' daily life, traditional tools, and elements of Sikinos's agricultural history are presented.

Agios Georgios beach, on the island's northeastern side, is considered by many the most beautiful on Sikinos. The route there rewards the visitor with impressive images of the Cycladic landscape, while the turquoise waters offer ideal conditions for swimming. Equally beautiful are the beaches Malta, Dialiskari, and Santorinios, which are reached either by hiking or by boat. Here visitors can enjoy absolute tranquility, often having almost the entire beach to themselves.

Sikinos is an ideal destination for those who love hiking. The island has a notable network of traditional paths that connect settlements, beaches, chapels, and farming areas. Walking the trails of Sikinos, visitors discover dry-stone walls, old threshing floors, small chapels, and panoramic views that stretch as far as the neighboring Cycladic islands. Nature remains almost untouched and the sense of isolation is restorative for those seeking a real disconnection from everyday life. Particularly popular is the route from Chora to Episkopi and the Monastery of Chrysopigi, as well as the hiking routes that lead to Agios Georgios and the island's more secluded beaches.
