Lefkes: The village - gem of the Parian interior
Lefkes was probably founded in the 15th century and the first inhabitants were refugees who came from Crete as well as locals who chose the mountain to build their village out of fear of pirates. It is set amid greenery, beneath the islands highest peak, Agioi Pantes. The village has numerous churches, while on the surrounding hills you will see some of the last surviving windmills on the island.
The village houses are amphitheatrically built and form many narrow alleys where cars do not enter - which makes them ideal for walking. Covered archways, imposing neoclassical buildings and low houses with well-kept courtyards create a postcard-perfect Cycladic setting. Enjoy your stroll along Ramnos, the villages central cobbled street, stopping to shop at the little shops selling decorative items, jewelry, souvenirs, ceramics, and to see interesting buildings such as the House of Literature.Climb up to the enormous church of the Holy Trinity, the villages jewel. It is built of Parian marble and has impressive bell towers.
Sit for a coffee in one of the picturesque squares and try traditional dishes at the villages little tavernas. In Lefkes, apart from various events organized by the cultural association YRIA, the Karavolas Festival also takes place at the end of August. At the villages biggest celebration you will taste karavoles (large snails), skordalia, ampelofasoula, chickpeas baked in the oven and local wine.
If you like hiking, its worth following the Byzantine trail paved with marble slabs that connects Lefkes with the neighboring village of Prodromos, a delightful 7 km route among small vineyards, olive groves and fragrant shrubs.
