Just a breath away from Athens, the beautiful artificial Lake Doxa is an ideal destination for a day trip or for a weekend, any time of year.
Just two hours from Athens, in Mountainous Corinthia, lies a place of exceptional beauty. An artificial lake where the mountains and the colorful mixed forests of the region are reflected in its blue green waters. The landscape here is more reminiscent of… Switzerland.
Near the village of Feneos, at an elevation of 900 meters, Lake Doxa is a dreamy alpine landscape you can visit every season of the year. The place is ideal for picnics, while around the lake you can enjoy various routes and outdoor activities in nature. The loop around the lake does not exceed 5 km, yet it is rich in sights.
Lake Doxa: A paradise in the mountains of Corinthia
The distinct character of the landscape and the variety of activities make Lake Doxa a unique destination for the visitor. The lake is ringed by forest with firs, black pines, oaks, plane trees and chestnuts. Its construction was completed in the late 1990s and it was formed by the Doxa stream that flows in the area.
Its perimeter, distinguished by alternating scenery of rocks, wet meadows and reeds, reaches 3.8 km. It is a relatively deep lake for its small size, as its depth reaches 40 meters. In the past the lake flooded several times, covering the broader plain of Feneos and destroying the crops of the residents of the time.
In the center of the lake stretches a narrow peninsula, where you will find the small, picturesque chapel of Saint Fanourios, while higher up, on a slope about 2 km away, stands the historic Monastery of Saint George of Feneos from the 15th century amid beautiful nature. There, you can taste the famous rose petal spoon sweet made by the monks and enjoy from the covered wooden balcony the unique view of the lake.
What to see in the surrounding area
The wider area of Doxa and Feneos lends itself to a delightful, nature-loving escape with stops in stone-built mountain villages, abundant outdoor activities (hiking, mountain biking, 4×4, etc). and rustic flavors that will stay with you. It is worth visiting the main village of Goura with the old stone-built houses and the beautiful square, as well as the villages of Feneos, Kalyvia (Ancient Feneos), Steno and Panorama.
