Assos: The village - gem of Kefalonia

In the northwestern part of Kefalonia, near the famous beach of Myrtos, lies one of the most beautiful seaside villages in Greece. Built amphitheatrically around its namesake peninsula, Assos looks as though it were lifted from a summer painting.

An island generously blessed by nature, which masterfully marries green with blue and combines natural beauty with a vibrant cultural aura, it is no coincidence that Kefalonia is one of Greeces most popular tourist destinations. Dreamy beaches, impressive caves and picturesque villages enchant visitors.

You cant visit Kefalonia and not go to Assos. Built like an amphitheater around its namesake peninsula, nestled among pines and cypresses, this seaside village looks as if it were lifted from a summer painting. Yes, Assos is just as beautiful as in the photos.

Pines and cypresses, a lush green peninsula, a Venetian castle, houses painted in vivid colors and crystal-clear waters that sparkle in the sun. On the northwestern side of Kefalonia, about 30 km. from Argostoli and a stones throw from the famous Myrtos beach, lies a village that is love at first sight. Here, traditional Ionian architecture with its colorful houses has been largely preserved. The picturesque little harbor with boats and yachts, the central pebbled beach with blue-green waters, as well as the dozens of beaches that are located in the wider area, compose a setting that wins over every traveler.

If you find yourself in Assos, dont miss climbing up to the Venetian castle on the opposite hill, which offers breathtaking views at sunset. The castle of Assos together with that of Saint George are considered the most important in Kefalonia. It was built at the end of the 16th century during the period of Venetian rule, with the aim of helping to better protect the island from pirates and naval raids.

Important battles were fought in this castle for the defense of the island, while for several decades it was used by the Greek state as a prison. The famous British general Charles James Napier describes it as «stronger even than Gibraltar». Visitors can see among the ruins, very close to the main gate, the ruined Catholic church of Saint Mark.
