Panta Vrechei: A refreshing walk in Evrytania's magical gorge

Panta Vrechi Gorge is a natural wonder of Evrytania. The sight of the waters cascading from above like a fine rain is unique.

While in summer we may seek sandy beaches and azure seas for our swims, there are many oases of coolness and awe-inspiring landscapes in mountain destinations across Greece that combine beautiful nature with the element of water and are ideal for alternative summer escapes.

If you've been to Karpenisi, chances are you've heard of the famous «Panta Vrechi». This gorge is one of Evrytania's most impressive areas and one of Greece's most beautiful natural attractions.

Between the mountains Kaliakouda and Platanaki, at the narrowest point of the Krikellopotamos, lies a fairytale place where it... «always rains» and the waterfalls never stop flowing. It's an impressive landscape the likes of which you won't easily encounter. The safest time to cross the Panta Vrechi Gorge is of course summer (from June to the end of September), with the help of experienced guides. You'll walk in the river, swim in the mountain waters, and enjoy nature at its best.

Getting there takes a special effort, but the unique spectacle will reward you. Reaching the spot where the famous waterfalls are, you'll be amazed by nature's wonder. The waters that come from Mount Kaliakouda fall from the tops of the rock walls, creating a wonderful curtain of water about 80 meters high, like an endless fine rain! In front of them, small natural pools with cool, crystal-clear waters tempt you to dive in and become one with nature.

Along the route there are many changes, and while at first you may be walking beside the river, there are many points where you'll need to wade into the water up to your waist. You'll need closed-toe hiking shoes, as well as a waterproof backpack with a second pair of athletic shoes, a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, snacks, and water.

How to get there

The Panta Vrechi Gorge is south of the town of Karpenisi, between the villages of Roska and Doliana. Access to the gorge is from various points and requires a vehicle suitable for dirt roads, with which you'll reach up to a certain point. Whatever route you follow, the scenery will reward you.
