Near the village of Prousos lies one of the most beautiful gorges in Evrytania, which ends at the Black Cave. Picturesque bridges amid dense vegetation and a waterfall 10 meters high create a magnificent landscape.
Starting fromKarpenisior other picturesque villages, the natural attractions you can visit in Evrytania are many. The «Panta Vrechei» gorge with its impressive waterfalls may be the most famous natural wonder in the region, but the lesser-known Black Cave Gorge has its own beauty and history worth discovering.
Evrytania: Crossing the Black Cave Gorge
About 2 km. from the village of Prousos with its famed monastery lies a wonderful gorge, one of the most beautiful in Evrytania, which leads to the Black Cave. The trail that connects Prousos Monastery with the Black Cave is well signposted and takes about an hour and a quarter to cross. You can also reach the Black Cave from the village, via a shorter and easy hiking route of about 30 minutes, suitable even for beginners. The starting point of this route is the stone fountain next to the Prousos - Tornos bridge where there is also space for parking.
Picturesque bridges amid dense vegetation and a 10-meter waterfall compose a wonderful landscape. At the end of the path, the Black Cave that will appear before you, with the stone, half-collapsed wall at its entrance, has its own history, as it served as a refuge for residents during the period of Ottoman rule and also during the German occupation.
Those with specialized climbing equipment can continue the route towards the Via Ferrata. This is a section of the gorge that is accessible only by cables on the rock and iron, fixed rungs. For beginners, an experienced guide is required.
