In the historic port of Kalamata, a 1928 industrial building finds new life as a 4-star boutique hotel, keeping alive the memory of Messinia's currants and turning the area's history into a contemporary hospitality experience. The ASO Hotel is housed in a building that formed part of the Autonomous Currant Organization (ASO), one of Greece's most important trade organizations, which managed the production and exports of Messinian currants.

The hotel was created by Ioannis Kolovos and Katerina Gyftea with the aim of showcasing one of Kalamata's significant industrial buildings and giving it new life through contemporary hospitality. Their core philosophy is to preserve the building's 'soul' and create experiences that connect the guest with the area's history and authentic identity.

Its philosophy is summed up in the phrase 'From Land to Legacy'. It's not just a slogan, but the concept that runs through the entire ASO Hotel experience. The journey of Messinian currants – from the land, cultivation, and processing to storage, trade, place, culture, and ultimately legacy – becomes the foundation on which the identity of the space has been designed.

The building itself is a vital part of this narrative, as it was constructed in 1928, at a time when currants were considered Messinia's 'black gold'. Tons of goods passed through these facilities before traveling from the port of Kalamata to Europe and the rest of the world. Today, where the fruits of Messinia's land were once housed, people from all over the world are welcomed.

The hotel was designed with the goal of preserving the space's authenticity. Stone, original bricks, metal reinforcements, and wooden beams remain visible, while timber from the original roof was repurposed and interwar-era materials were reintegrated into the hotel's spaces. In addition, during the renovation authentic historical objects that were used when the building operated as a trading depot were preserved and restored.

At ASO Hotel the 17 uniquely designed rooms have a name, character, and identity. Accommodation options include rooms with a private hammam, a loft with an indoor jacuzzi, rooms with a private outdoor jacuzzi, and a two-level suite. The room category The Land is inspired by the earth and production. The rooms Vineyard, Veraison, Sun Dry, Grade, Repository, and Emporium refer to the different stages of the currants' journey: from the vineyard and the ripening of the fruit to sun-drying, grading, storage, and trade.

The Roots rooms are dedicated to Messinia's identity, place, and memory. Messana, Denthis, Voidokilia, Nestor, Primarolia, Ithomi, Nedousa and Kardamili draw their inspiration from Ancient Messene, Taygetos, Pylos, Voidokilia, the historic currant trade routes, the villages of Taygetos, and Mani. The Legacy rooms are inspired by cultural heritage, the Greek spirit, and art. The rooms Morias, Zorbas, and Callas are connected with history, freedom, authenticity, and Greece's international cultural heritage.

At the heart of the hotel is the Experience Hall, a space where the industrial identity of the historic building remains strong. It's not simply a common area, but a meeting point, a place to relax and for culture, where guests can enjoy their coffee or drink, learn the building's history, and take part in presentations and small events.

Stone walls, wooden beams, metal elements, and large open spaces create an atmosphere that recalls the era when the building operated as a trading depot for Messinia's currants. At the center of the space stands the authentic currant sorting machine, one of the hotel's most important historical exhibits, which was preserved and highlighted during the renovation.

The connection with Messinia is also reflected in the hotel's breakfast. ASO Hotel collaborates with local producers and highlights products of Messinia's land, such as extra virgin olive oil, currants, figs, local cheeses, wines, and homemade preserves. Thus, the gastronomic experience becomes another way of connecting the guest with Messinia, its flavors, and the area's culinary tradition.
