Monosandalos: The tsipouro tavern - an ode to flavor and the mythology of Volos

Monosandalos is a tsipouro taverna by the sea with a wonderful view, inviting us to travel through the rich mythology and the delicious flavors of Volos.

On a trip to Volos, the city where the culture of tsipouro taverns blossomed, a stop for spirits and meze is a must. The tradition has continued for decades, with a glass of tsipouro and accompanying seafood meze on small plates. At Monosandalos, the tsipouro tavern beside the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen with the sea as a backdrop, flavor meets good company and the warm hospitality of its people.

The story of Monosandalos is inextricably linked to the regions rich mythology. The famed hero Jason, son of King Aeson and Polyimede, upon coming of age returned from Pelion to Iolkos to claim the throne. On the way, however, he lost one of his sandals in the Anaurus River. Thus he appeared before his uncle Pelias, one-sandaled, setting in motion the adventure that would lead to the Argonaut expedition and the legendary journey for the Golden Fleece. Inspired by mythology, Katerina Davlamanou, with fifteen years of experience in hospitality, opened the tsipouro tavern in 2023. It is the seafood sibling of Ouzotherapy located in the center of Volos.

On winter weekends something special happens at the tsipouro tavern, as flavors are paired with live rebetiko music. The decor, with an emphasis on earthy tones and woven textures, marries simplicity with the sea breeze to create a welcoming space.

On Monosandalos menu, seafood takes center stage, with recipes based on seasonal ingredients. All the ingredients come from local producers, while the vegetables are grown in their family garden. In the display case youll find fresh fish and shellfish daily, while the meze that accompany the tsipouro change constantly, keeping the tasting experience alive.

The dishes youll be served are based on traditional recipes from Volos. Standouts on the menu include, among others, shrimp pasta and lobster pasta, seafood risotto and tuna tigania, a distinctive recipe youll hardly find elsewhere. Spaghetti with cuttlefish brings a contemporary approach to tradition, while the classic Volos meze are not missing, such as fried anchovies, grilled octopus, fried zucchini and potato salad. Everything is accompanied by tsipouro from local producers with labels from across Thessaly, or by ouzo from various parts of Greece.
