Balaouro Ouzeri
The locals’ favorite ouzeri, Balaouro feels as if it were on an island. This family-run ouzeri has been operating since 2004 at the picturesque little port of Sfageia and emphasizes well-cooked dishes and fresh fish. The ouzo meze include everything from stuffed vine leaves, octopus fritters and eggplant turnovers to mussel pilaf, cuttlefish stew and sun-dried octopus. Fisherman’s pilaf, steamed mussels and calamari are among the favorite dishes. Thasou 19, Sfageia, Kavala
Psaraki
Born from a love of good food, Psaraki is an ouzeri by the waves serving meze crafted with care and fresh ingredients. Recipes are rooted in Greek cuisine and flavors that evoke the joys of family tables. The most special time is at sunset, when the old town is lit with the colors of the sunset. Varieties of ouzo and tsipouro are accompanied by salads, meze such as seafood pastourmas and octopus carpaccio, the traditional fish soup and a selection of fresh trawler-caught fish. Seafood giouvetsi and shrimp risotto are also popular. Ethnikis Antistaseos 3, Kavala
Savvas Fish Tavern
A family-run taverna with a history since 1996, Savvas sits at the old picturesque port of Sfageia. The sea-view taverna serves ultra-fresh fish and is famed for service that makes guests feel at home. Tsalapeteinos (Tsalapeteinos Urban Farm)
An «urban farm» in the center of Kavala, Tsalapeteinos is a welcoming spot with tasteful decor and food for all hours of the day. Between the cool of the trees and the calm of the sea, it has been housed for a decade in a building with over a century of history. Among other things, it once housed an Ottoman bank, a post office and a food market. Today in its refreshed space you will try everything from fresh pasta, meats and special cuts to burgers. The cocktail list is updated regularly and in their cellar there are many different wine labels from the Greek vineyard. Culture holds a special place in the restaurant, as it hosts theater and music performances and art exhibitions. Karaoli & Dimitriou Square 36, Kavala
Imaret Restaurant
If you are staying at the iconic Imaret hotel in the old town of Kavala, you will have the opportunity to taste the flavors of its restaurant. The impressive 19th-century Ottoman complex of Muhammad Ali Pasha has served various purposes until it was transformed into a luxury hotel in the 2000s. Imaret’s restaurant has a unique oriental atmosphere and views over the city. Its luxurious menu is based on Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on local products. You will try everything from salads to meat fillets, some seafood options, pasta and their own unique desserts. Poulidou 30, Kavala
