Sigtuna: Escape to the oldest town in Sweden

A city with a thousand years of history, Sigtuna is the jewel of Sweden that will transport you through time.

Just 40 minutes from Stockholm lies a place that feels straight out of a movie set. In Sigtuna you expect to see the Vikings spring to life before your eyes. One of the most unexpectedly dreamy places, the oldest town in Sweden and its first capital, is a true gem that has stood proudly through the centuries. The town exudes a sense of calm and serenity and is ideal for a day trip from Stockholm or a longer stay for those seeking a journey through the ages.

The history of Sigtuna

Its centuries-old history begins around 980 with King Erik the Victorious and the Vikings. Their imprint, after all, has remained indelible even to this day. The countrys oldest settlement stretches beside the impressive Lake Mälaren and remains almost intact to this day. Walking along the cobbled streets of the town, you feel the Viking heritage come to life, with the numerous runestones that abound in the area.

It is said that Sigtuna has more runestones (stones with inscriptions found mainly in the Scandinavian countries) than any other town in the world, about 30 in its center and 170 in the municipality as a whole. Most date from the 11th century and testify to the dominance of the Vikings in the area.

What to do in the town

The heart of Sigtuna beats on Stora Gatan, the countrys oldest pedestrian street. The strikingly colorful buildings are mostly shops with various goods, traditional delicacies, cafés and bookstores. In the main square, Stora Torget, youll find the smallest Town Hall in Sweden, built in 1744, while a little further south stands the Church of St. Mary (St. Marys Church), constructed in the 13th century by the Dominican Order and presenting a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Also significant are the ruins of three medieval churches, St. Peter, St. Lawrence and St. Olaf, which offer a unique glimpse into the towns spiritual and architectural heritage. Walk beside the leafy shore of Lake Mälaren and sit to enjoy the magic of nature. Sit in Humlegårdens park for a picnic or sunbathing like the locals do and borrow a book from the mini open-air library, the Bokkiosk.

Just outside the town you can visit Västerängsudds Rastplats, with a commanding view of the lake that will offer you a sense of peace and tranquility. Beyond the center lies the storybook castle Wenngarns slott, with its impressive Baroque gardens.

Sigtuna is an ideal place for nature lovers and those who love outdoor activities. You can go cycling and canoeing on the lake, and there are popular hiking trails. However, if you want something more relaxing you can enjoy your coffee in the picturesque cafés that have lush outdoor spaces and views of the lake. Sit down for food or dessert at Strandvillans Café, for lunch at Restaurang Kristina and for brunch at Café Valvet, or try the ice cream at Sigtuna Gelato.
