There is certainly a lot to do on a trip toBudapest. One of them is to swim in the thermal waters of its famous baths. Hungarys capital, with more than 100 natural thermal springs, is one of Europes most famous spa cities.

The areas thermal springs were enjoyed by the Romans. Remnants of the vast baths built during that period are still visible today. During the period of Ottoman rulebaths were constructed in the city serving both bathing and medical purposes, and some of them are still in use today.

Budapest gained its reputation as the city of thermal baths in the 1920s, while in 1934 it was officially designated as a «spa city». Lets look at the best baths in Budapest.

Szechenyi Baths

The Szechenyi Baths are among the largest baths in Europe and have been operating since 1913. They are the only «old» thermal baths located on the Pest side. The Szechenyi Baths are housed in a neo-baroque building complex that looks like a museum! The setting features 18 pools (15 indoor and 3 outdoor that are open all year round). The outdoor section of the baths is striking. In the winter months, the experience of relaxing in the warm waters while watching the snow fall is delightful. In addition to the thermal pools, there are 10 saunas and many treatments are offered.

Gellért Baths

Set within the famed Hotel Gellért on the Buda hills, they impress with their architecture and grandeur. The Gellért Baths are among the most famous thermal baths not only in Budapest, but across Europe. The «Palace of Baths», as locals often call it, was founded in 1918, and a visit here is a unique experience of relaxation and well-being, with 10 pools of various sizes and temperatures. The well-preserved art nouveau interior features colorful mosaics, marble columns, stained-glass windows, and statues.

Rudas Baths

TheRudas Bathshave been operating since the 16th century and are an outstanding example of architecture dating back to the Ottoman era. The octagonal pool, topped by a 10-meter-diameter dome, steals the show. A highlight of the Rudas Baths is the rooftop pool that offers panoramic views of the Danube.

Lukács Baths

TheLukacs Bathsare among Budapests most renowned baths, much loved by locals too. Although the architecture and facilities are not as impressive as at Szechenyi and Gellert, these baths have their own strengths. Around the inner courtyard, marble plaques commemorate the thanks of patrons who were cured there.

Tip: Dont forget to bring your swimsuit, towels, and flip-flops. Its best to visit the baths on weekdays.
