MESSOLONGHI

Built on a peninsula between its namesake lagoon and that of Kleisova, at the mouths of the Evinos and Acheloos rivers, Messolonghi has a charm all its own. It is also called the Sacred City, as it is closely linked with the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Its unique lagoon, with its picturesque «pelades» -the small wooden houses on stilts, out in the water- constitutes an environmental park and ecosystem.
