From Epirus to the Peloponnese and from Macedonia to the South Aegean, the British Times recommend Greek destinations for holidays away from the crowds.
Summer holiday destinations that break away from the popular islands are presented in an article by the British Times. «Greece attracts 35 million visitors annually, with around 4.5 million of them being British», the report notes. Since many now seek less touristy places for their holidays, the Times present 25 places in Greece that are unknown to the general public and the tourist crowds.
Away from the big resorts of Rhodes and Crete and the crowds of Mykonos and Santorini, there are towns, villages and islands with an authentic atmosphere and lower prices.
In the top three are the stately Ermoupoli of Syros, which is also the capital of the Cyclades, Manolas on the small Thirasia and Machairia of Rhodes. The list also includes the Loutraki near Athens, Ierapetra in Crete, Karystos in Evia, Koroni in Messinia and Monemvasia with its castle town.
The Times also suggest mountain destinations for summer holidays, such as Kalavryta, Vradeto in Zagori and Portaria in Pelion. The list is completed by a few more places that are far from tourists’ radar such as Aetoliko in Messolonghi and Edessa with its famous waterfalls.
