Also known as Lake Preveli or Finikas, Preveli Beach, about 35 km. south of the city of Rethymno, looks like a small slice of paradise.

At the exit of Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where Megas Potamos ends, Preveli Beach (also known as Lake Preveli or Finikas) is a true paradise. As the river flows out onto the beach it creates a small lake, while the endemic Theophrastus palms elevate the scenery.
Most of the beautiful palm forest burned in 2010, but thankfully it recovered to a great extent within a short time. It is the second-largest palm forest in Crete, after the palm forest at Vai.
Preveli Beach has blonde sand and a pebbly seabed, while an impressive heart-shaped rock, the «rock of lovers» according to the locals, rising from the sea will catch your eye. Because of this exotic setting, the beach was a favorite destination for hippies in the ‘70s, who chose it for meditation.
Exploring this lush green area is full of surprises. You can swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea or in the fresh waters of the lagoon and take a stroll on foot or by pedal boat along the river, through the palm trees to Kourtaliotiko Gorge.
Very close by is the historic Preveli Monastery, which comprises two separate complexes 1.5 km apart, the ruined Kato Moni of Prodromos and the Pisso Moni of Theologos, which operates as a mens monastery and is open to visitors.
You can reach Preveli in various ways: by road to Preveli Monastery and from there follow the path, about 20 minutes, which leads to the beach. The path offers a unique view from above. There is also a short path to the beach from nearby Drymiskiano Ammoudi. Alternatively, you can reach Preveli by boat from Plakias.
