A lesser-known yet beautiful village in Epirus, Theodoriana of Arta with its impressive waterfalls is a true «little gem» worth discovering.
Nestled on a slope of the eastern Tzoumerka, cradled by magnificent nature and about 80 km. from the city of Arta, lies the village of Theodoriana. Lesser-known yet beautiful, Theodoriana in Arta is a true little gem worth discovering.
To get here, you take the road from Vourgareli and Athamanio that climbs steeply, threading through a spectacular landscape ringed by mountain peaks and then descends to Theodoriana. The village’s houses spread across two adjoining hamlets, on a slope between 850 and 1,100 meters in elevation. In the center of the village, in the square with the imposing plane tree, the elevation reads 960 meters.
At the Kato Mylos site there is a watermill-fulling mill and the old bridge, while in the square stands the Monastery of Panagia (1973), in whose courtyard a secret school once operated. In the village there are guesthouses, cafés and tavernas, while at the Panorama Refuge there is a guesthouse and a taverna. In the neighboring settlement of Skarpari, which lies beside the Achelous, you can taste fresh trout and go rafting.
A paradise for nature lovers
With two rushing rivers, tributaries of the Achelous, encircling it, with the famed twin waterfalls that rank among the largest in Greece and dozens of springs, Theodoriana is a paradise for outdoor activities.
At the northern exit of the village, after a 20-minute hike, you come upon the Souda waterfall, the hallmark of Theodoriana and a magnet for thousands of visitors every year. The icy waters of the Goura river plunge from a height of 25 meters, first splitting in two to form two magnificent waterfalls. The sight is unique.
