A quick escape to Evia for refreshing dips is exactly what we need now that the heat has set in. Evia is filled with beautiful beaches for endless hours of relaxation.
One of these wonderful beaches is in Kalamos, a seaside settlement washed by the Aegean, 65 km from Chalkida (less than 2 hours from Athens). Here you'll find a lovely sandy beach with fine pebbles, fantastic waters and impressive rock formations.
Kalamos: The «diamond» beach of central Evia
The beach of Kalamos on Evia's eastern shores, in the Municipality of Kymi – Aliveri, is an ideal choice for a refreshing day trip from Athens. In fact, it's made up of two small consecutive beaches separated by a rock with a distinctive hole in the middle.
As you arrive, the view of the beach from above will impress you. The first beach, the northern one, is called by the locals «Kali» because its waters are usually calmer, while the second, the southern one, just a few meters from the first, is called «Kakia» as its waters are wilder. On the first beach, which is more organized, you'll find cafes and tavernas for fresh fish and ouzo meze, while in the settlement there are also rooms to let if you want to stay overnight.
Getting to Kalamos is easy. From Chalkida you'll head towards South Evia and after passing Vasiliko, Eretria, Amarynthos and Aliveri you'll continue towards Kymi. When you reach the village of Neochori you'll see a sign for Kalamos - Achladeri. Continue towards Kalamos, turn right at the junction, and after about 5 km you'll reach the beach.
