The Krya area in Livadeia is ideal for a delightful outing in nature, a short distance from Athens.

Just an hour and a half from Athens, in the heart of Livadeia, lies a little paradise with running waters, small waterfalls, stone bridges and towering plane trees. The Erkyna River, with its springs in the Krya area, is an enchanting place, ideal for relaxation and strolls in the greenery. Access is very easy and the area lends itself to a delightful day trip. Driving on the Athens - Lamia National Road, take the exit toward Kastro and in about 30 km you will find yourself at the Krya Springs.

Excursion to the Krya Springs in Livadeia

The Erkyna River is one of the few rivers in Greece with a feminine name. In Greek mythology, Erkyna, daughter of Trophonius and friend of Persephone, was a nymph of a spring of the same name. Pilgrims seeking a prophecy from the Oracle of Trophonius, which was located a short distance away, would come to bathe in its waters. Indeed, within the river there is, on a rock, the bust of the nymph.

Rich in natural beauty, with dense vegetation, running waters, canals, small waterfalls and enormous plane trees, theKryaarea is a place that will enchant you. Cobbled lanes and little stone arched bridges complete the idyllic scene. On both banks of the river there are cafes and tavernas where you can of course enjoy Livadeias famed souvlaki with views of the springs.

In the 19th century, the rivers rushing waters powered mill wheels and factory machines, contributing decisively to the citys industrial development. On its two banks, presses, yarn mills, spinning mills, flour mills and fulling mills were set up. Today, the Watermill and the Fulling Mill are two characteristic buildings of that era.

It is worth walking the entire area and following the cobbled path to the little stone theater located at the entrance to the gorge. If you feel like it, you can climb up to the chapel of Agia Ierousalim higher up, to enjoy the view toward the medieval castle, the town of Livadeia and Mount Parnassos. So put on your athletic shoes, charge your phones and get ready for many photos.
