A new global study has revealed the 10 most attractive cities for travelers in 2026 and you might not have guessed which one is first.
The cities that stand out the most in travelers' preferences around the world were recently published by Time Out. The Global Tourist City Attractiveness Index ranks destinations based on their popularity, overall feel, and the perception visitors have during their trip. To shape the results, data from social media in 14 different languages were analyzed, with the study examining both the volume and the sentiment reflected in travelers' conversations about a total of 200 cities across the globe.
The evaluation of the most attractive cities was based on four key areas that shape a destination's overall impression: scenery, culture, experiences, and hospitality. Thus, the ranking isn't simply about the cities that garner the most interest, but about those that seem to leave the most positive impressions on their visitors. The most attractive city in the world
For 2026 the city that topped the list is New York. The "Big Apple" was declared the most attractive city in the world, surpassing every other destination. However, the term "attractive" here doesn't necessarily refer to the city's appearance but to the overall experience.
New York landed at the top of the global ranking thanks to the combination of its enormous international exposure and the positive sentiment it enjoys as a tourist destination. Paris follows in second place, while Japan makes a strong showing in the top five, with Osaka and Kyoto taking third and fourth place respectively. Seoul rounds out the top five.
Japan steals the show
Japan, however, steals the show this year, as beyond Osaka and Kyoto in the top five, there are more of its cities on the list. In total, eight Japanese destinations appear in this ranking, more than any other country. Okinawa is in eighth place, while in the expanded list of the top 50 cities we also find Tokyo, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Yokohama, and Sapporo.
