The best beaches in Spetses

Where to take a dip on the cosmopolitan island in the Argosaronic Gulf.

Close to Athens, Spetses is one of the most cosmopolitan destinations in the Saronic Gulf. It blends an aristocratic ambience, rich history, distinctive architecture, and pine forests that reach the sea. Although the island isn't as renowned for its beaches, there are plenty of options for every preference. From organized beaches you can reach on foot to secluded ones that offer tranquility, on Spetses you'll unwind amid beautiful natural scenery.

Agia Marina

Agia Marina is one of Spetses' most popular beaches thanks to its proximity to town. It's about 2 kilometers from Dapia and the port and you can even walk there in roughly half an hour. You'll find sunbeds and a beach bar, as well as a small free section. The shore is pebbly and sandy, while the seabed is sandy. The beach suits all ages, so it fills up on weekends.

Kouzounos

Very close to Agia Marina lies Kouzounos beach, a hidden, sheltered cove with blue-green waters. Access is a bit trickier, as there's a short hiking path, but it rewards those seeking something more secluded.

Xylokeriza

Xylokeriza sits in a distinctive landscape filled with pines. This pebbly beach with turquoise waters and a rocky seabed has been organized for years, yet manages to keep its authentic character.

Continuing along the route on the island's far side, you'll come to Agioi Anargyroi beach, the largest and one of the most impressive on Spetses. The setting combines pebbles, crystal-blue waters, and lush vegetation. The beach is largely organized and offers options for watersports. This is also where the path that leads to the famed Bekiri Cave begins, one of the island's most intriguing natural sights. The area is ideal for those who want to spend the whole day by the sea, as there are places to eat.

Agia Paraskevi

Agia Paraskevi beach lies quite far from Spetses town and is considered by many the island's most beautiful. Verdant and pine-studded, with the namesake chapel completing the scene, it's organized with sunbeds and a beach bar. The waters are crystal-clear and calm.

Zogeria

Zogeria Bay lies on the island's north side, in a gorgeous landscape of olive trees and pines that spill down to calm, blue-green waters. The bay consists of two distinct small coves. In the first you'll find a sandy, organized beach with clear waters, and there's also a taverna operating there. The neighboring cove is essentially one vast, secluded beach where numerous boats anchor daily.

Vrellos

Returning to the stretch of coastline that's also Spetses' port, Vrellos beach is a favorite, fairly close option for the island's visitors. With blue waters and pines all around, Vrellos fills with families and groups of friends in summer. You'll also find a beach bar with sunbeds.

Ligoneri

After Vrellos in the Ligoneri area you'll find undeveloped beaches where you can swim in peace. Follow the path and you'll come across trees that reach almost into the sea. Stay for sunset to watch the sky fill with color.

Kaiki

In the Ligoneri area you'll also find Kaiki, one of the island's most popular beaches, especially with younger visitors. It's almost in front of the entrance to the Anargyreios and Korgialeneios School of Spetses and the beach bar draws big crowds -especially on weekends- from morning till night. The beach is pebbly, but there's also a jetty with a ladder for dives. You can do watersports here too.

Agios Mamas

In the heart of Spetses' town lies Agios Mamas, the closest beach to the port, just a few minutes' walk from Dapia. It's a small beach in front of the chapel of Agios Mamas, largely unorganized, and it attracts those who don't want to go far or use transport to reach the sea. Along the shore there are cafés and restaurants, which lets you relax there all day.

Small coves

Beyond the island's well-known beaches, there are hidden treasures you can reach by boat, as well as small coves accessible on foot. Whether you choose to walk from Dapia toward the Old Port or from the other side toward Ligoneri, you'll come across spots many locals choose for their daily dip.

How to get to Spetses' beaches

Cars aren't allowed on Spetses, only buses, scooters, horse-drawn carriages, and small boats. To reach the beaches, depending on the distance, you'll need to walk or use one of the available means. Depending on the side of the island you want to head to, there are two bus stops (one at Agios Mamas and one at Poseidonion) that go to the island's beaches. During the high season, however, you may find it hard to get a seat on the bus.

Additionally, there are tourist boats that stop at beaches, as well as water taxis that can take you there. Another option is a land taxi, which you can call or find at the rank. Finally, for more independence there's the option to rent a bicycle, scooter, or ATV and make getting around easier.
