The Parnassos Ski Center is among the mountains most popular spots, but what truly steals the show are its villages, each with its own unique character. Stone-built traditional houses, picturesque squares shaded by plane trees, running waters and forests reveal an enchanting setting. Whether you want a cosmopolitan weekend of good food and strolls, or a peaceful escape to breathe clean oxygen, these 7 excursions on Parnassos are ideal for the weekends ahead.

Arachova

Arachova, nestled on the slopes of Parnassos, is one of Greeces most popular winter destinations. The liveliest village on Parnassos fills with travelers on winter weekends, as it is an ideal base for outings to the Ski Center and the surrounding villages. Strolls in Arachova are endless, with the main street stealing the spotlight, while the signature clock perched on the rock and the chapel of St. George offer panoramic views over the tiled rooftops. In the heart of the village youll find the Arachova Folklore Museum, where youll learn all about the areas tradition and history.

Lakka Square is a meeting point and the perfect place for coffee for those who like to people-watch, and there are many dining options with wonderful views. Arachova is famous for its nightlife, with bars buzzing especially on weekends. In the shops you can buy local products such as the local formaela cheese, traditional pasta, trahana, and Parnassos honey.

Tithorea is an ideal escape for lovers of nature and adventure. An authentic destination for those seeking tranquility away from the cosmopolitan villages, Tithorea has preserved its calm character over the years. Velitsa, as it was called until 1926, lies on the northeastern slopes of Parnassos at the site of ancient Tithorea, at an elevation of 440 m. The village lends itself to total relaxation and leisurely strolls for food and coffee in the square with the centuries-old plane tree, a village hallmark dating from 1887.

The fortification wall of Tithorea, one of the best-preserved examples of Hellenistic military architecture, the cave of Odysseas Androutsos, the Kachala gorge, and the Tithorea Aesthetic Forest are some of the areas interesting sights. Near the village youll find paths leading to rewarding hiking destinations. The most impressive spot in the area is the Tithorea gorge, a unique natural landscape with sheer cliffs, springs, and running waters. Hiking through the gorge is one of the most distinctive experiences on Parnassos and is especially recommended in spring and autumn.

Amfikleia

Amfikleia is a quieter and more authentic choice, ideal for those who want to avoid the crowds. Located on Parnassoss northeastern foothills at 400 m elevation, it strongly retains its traditional character with stone houses, picturesque cobbled alleys, neoclassical mansions, and beautiful churches. It is an ideal base for those who love skiing and serenity, as it lies on the mountains quieter side.

The large square with plane trees is the center of village life and ideal for coffee or a meal. Dont miss the Bread Museum, the only one of its kind in Greece, where youll learn everything about the history, types, and cycles of bread-making. Amfikleia is closely linked with nature, as routes for mountain hikes start from here, along with paths perfect for leisurely walks. Its worth crossing, to its east, the steep Varsamos ravine along a path, enjoying nature and lush vegetation in all their glory, to end at the age-old church of Gersalis (Agia Ierousalim), built within an elevated cave in the heart of a precipitous rock.

Agoriani, also known as Eptalofos, is considered by many the most picturesque village on Parnassos. Just 25 km from Arachova and surrounded by firs, it is a favorite destination for those seeking relaxation combined with the beauty of nature. Agoriani, built on seven hills—which also gave it the name Eptalofos—is known for the impressive 20-meter waterfall just a few steps from its square. All around there are cafés and tavernas where you can savor local gastronomy to the sound of running waters.

Descending from the square towards the Folklore Museum youll also encounter the villages second waterfall. Walk to the lovely chapel of Agia Paraskevi, where a little further up youll find a terrace with a fountain and views over Parnassoss slopes. It is said that Angelos Sikelianos wrote many of his masterpieces there. Nature lovers can hike the areas trails, the most famous being the E4 that connects Agoriani with Delphi in 6 hours, and explore the renowned Corycian Cave (Cave of Pan).

Polydrosos in Phocis is one of Parnassoss villages that win visitors over with its relaxed atmosphere. Set in a lush landscape on Parnassoss northeastern slopes, at an elevation of 380 meters, it stands out for its plane trees and cool climate that make it an ideal destination in every season. Until 1928 it was called Souvala, a name still used today. The village is known for its springs and running waters, which create a setting ideal for walking and relaxation.

In the villages pretty square shaded by plane trees youll find traditional tavernas and the Church of the Theotokos. The paths around the settlement are perfect for leisurely walks in nature. In 20 minutes on foot youll reach the springs of Agia Eleousa, an impressive spot with bubbling waters. There youll see the ruins of the Byzantine church of Paliopanagia, built in the 6th-7th c. AD. Dont forget to stop by picturesque Ano Polydrosos, the striking village set within a dense forest.

Vargiani

Built at an elevation of 880 meters, Vargiani offers impressive views and a sense of seclusion. The traditional settlement, with stone-built houses and running waters from the Bourboula springs, remains untouched by mass tourism. It is the ideal place to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with nature. In the villages paved square youll find tavernas and a traditional kafeneio to enjoy your coffee under the plane trees, with the picturesque bell tower of Agia Paraskevi as a backdrop, while you gaze at the slopes of Parnassos on one side and Giona on the other.
